Hemp milk
« on: March 16, 2012, 18:16:19 pm »
Started DD on hemp milk this past week (she spits up everytime I have milk) as part of weaning from BF. Started with just once/day. She's drinking some but not that much (1 - 3 oz). I'm certain it's not near as much as she would if she was having a BF. I bought the unsweetened kind so it's got a distinct flavour, but it's not terrible.

Wondering about buying their original kind which is sweetened with evaporated cane sugar. I looked at the nutritional data for it and it has no more sugar then milk. I am aware that hemp milk doesn't provide as much fat as whole milk does, but is similar to 2% in fat but slightly less calories because less sugar. I'm thinking that if the hemp milk was slightly sweeter she would drink more...therefore getting more of the needed fat/calories and calcium. BUT in my head purchasing something with added sugar is against everything I've been doing...like looking up sugarless birthday cake recipes!

Any thoughts on this?

The one available in the uk says it is sweetened with grape juice

Can you get hold of that one?

I don't think we get that brand in Canada...now I've looked to see what other hemp milk options I have, but the one I bought was at my local grocery store so that was super convenient. Not coming up with any other canadian options then Hemp Bliss.

I guess I'm wondering is one source of sugar any different then another? cane sugar vs grape juice? hmmm...I'm sure the caloric value is the same but is there much nutritional value to either???

going to work on that question...

I buy the original (sweetened) rather than the unsweetened soy milk for Dylan. Like you, I tried the unsweetened first and it just wasn't great - a distinct soy-y flavor and Dylan would drink next to nothing. Bought the original instead (much milder flavour) and the transition was much easier. I buy an organic, non-gmo brand, and given his food allergies he doesn't get much in the way of extra sugar in his diet anyway, kwim? I have bigger fish to fry than a bit of 'organic evaporated cane juice', and since buying the sweetened kind gets the milk into him I am happy with my choice ;)

Gobbled up 4 oz today of the original (sweetened) hemp bliss. Probably would have drank more if we had started with more in the cup. Thanks again! Needed that little push to get on with it!
