introducing milk products - what should I be looking for?
« on: March 20, 2012, 20:43:03 pm »
Hi my 16 month old was diagnosed with MPI as a little baby (she has/had reflux and mucus in stools).  She has been on a special amino acid based formula for months (we get it sent to us for through Children's hospital).  But....I don't think her doctor will renew it again so I have a couple of questions:

1.  What are people using as an alternative to milk?

2.  I have slowly been introducing foods containing milk products (yogurt included) so far I haven't noticed much....maybe a little diaper rash and a little more gas.  But nothing too obvious.  What should I be looking for at this age?

Thanks!!

Hi, I think most people use soy, coconut, almond or oat milk as an alternative milk.

I would say those symptoms are a fairly typical reaction but really it is anything that is out of the ordinary for your LO - reactions can manifest themselves in all kinds of ways.

Thanks!  Yes, it's a difficult process.......Does a reaction tend to occur immediately?  Or days later?

It can be either depending on the type of allergy/intolerance. With MPI I guess it could take a while to show.

DD2 was MSPI but started tolerating soy formula at 9 months and has been on soy formula ever since on the advice of her pead.  We're going to attempt milk soon as well.

I'd say as long as the symptoms have gone away while she is still having the little bits then she is probably OK.  DD2 has been the same.  I had what I thought were failures a few times but now think it was more likely teething or reflux related.  So the last time I introduced just a few bites of cheese at a time and waited it out.  All symptoms went away after having little bits consistently in her diet.

My pead said to go for it with a small amount of milk and that we would know in a week if it still causing her problems.

Are you planning on trying the milk or going with a substitute?

thanks Lesliemarie :)  I've been trying a few milk products, but don't have the "guts" to try milk itself.  I'm thinking I might try almond milk.

I think she's having some mild reactions right now: slight diaper rash, hiccups(reflux aggravated), and grumpy.  But, like you said, it could be teething too!!!  I'm paranoid!!!
