Is my EASY wrong?
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:25:40 am »
Hi all,

Wondered if anyone can advise if our EASY is wrong? Our beautiful sleeper has been awake almost every hour for the last week or two. She has just got her two upper teeth through so I'm sure that has disrupted the routine. The EASY routine is as follows:

WO- 6.00-6.30am
E- 8.15am
A-8.30-11.00
S- 11.00-11.30 (12 if lucky)
E-12.00-12.30pm
A-12.30- 4.00pm most days!!!!!
S- used to be about 2pm-3pm now it's very rare
E- 4pm
A-4pm-6.15pm
S- by 7pm

Is it the afternoon nap we need to get back, anyone with any help would be appreciated

Can I ask has her AM nap always been this short or is this a recent thing?  It looks suspiciously OT to me, however I am wondering whether its only shortened recently as a result of her getting OT from refusing her afternoon nap but still going to bed at the usual time.  Is that the case?

Will she go down any earlier for her AM nap or does she refuse?

I think that the answers to my questions above are what will dictate whether you try & keep 2 naps or whether you make the jump to 1.

When you are on a short AM/long PM 2 nap routine, usually the A time before the morning nap is pretty short, so your LO either wakes naturally through UT or if you have to wake her, she isn't OT.  Then the next A time is also fairly short & then followed by a big nap.  This is quite a different structure to her current routine which is long A time, short nap, long A time, longer nap/nap refusal IYSWIM?  So if you try & keep the 2 nap routine you would probably want to try & structure her day to something more like this:

Wake: 6.30 ish
Nap:  9.30-10  (capped at 30mins max)
Nap:  1/1.30-2.30/3 (you may have to cap at 1.5hr here or you will likely get UT at BT & she will either fight BT or wake early the next day)
BT: 7/7.30

If she absolutely won't go down any earlier in the morning than 11am then I think you need to drop the afternoon nap, but to compensate for the loss of sleep at the afternoon nap, & especially since she's only taking a 30min-1hr nap in the AM, she absolutely needs a much earlier bedtime of 5.30-6pm.  I think if you do this, & repeat consistently then she will sleep for longer at night, which will help her get past the OT and you will find her nap will lengthen.  Once her nap starts to get longer you can very gradually start to shift her bedtime out later again, and as she gets used to the 1 nap you can then work on gradually shifting the nap closer to lunchtime.

What do you think?

ETA - and of course yes you are right teeth may have disrupted things.  But I definitely think you might need to tweak the routine.xx

Thanks hun, I think you may be right.
Naps used to be about 1 hour each sometimes longer and we used to put her to bed at 7.30pm but gradually she has got so tired we have moved bedtime routine back to 6-6.30pm, this also means she rarely gets to see my OH in the week, could this also have an effect?
Anyway today is going slightly different, will post below and if you could give me an idea of what to do tonight I would try ANYTHING
P.S no doubt this will get ruined by the change in the clocks tonight!!!!
Today:
Woke 5.45am
E- 7.30am (refused)
A- 7.30-8.30
E- 8.30 Tried food again, ate some toast
A- 8.45-9.50
S- 9.50-11.10
E- 11.50
A-12.30-2.30
S-2.30- Currently sleeping

Hiya sorry I'm only just reading this now so I'm not sure it'll be in time.  Well.... it sounds like the earlier nap today may have helped her to sleep for longer & so she's catching up on her OT!  What time did she wake from that PM nap in the end?  And what BT are you going for?

I think as a one off it might hopefully be ok while she eliminates OT, but if you do the above repeatedly you might find she is UT at BT and you'll either get a fight on your hands, or you'll get early waking because the morning nap is too long.  So if you do want to try the earlier AM nap, its important to cut it short at 30mins max to ensure a) she will be tired enough to go down in the afternoon & b) that her PM nap isn't so late that it inteferes with BT.

What are your thoughts?

& try not to worry about the clock change, even if she's up at 5am that's 6am new time.xx

Hi Claire,

Thanks so much for the reply. She is just nodding off now (19.35). She had a bath with mummy at 18.45 and was still wide awake so we did our wind down a bit slower and was having her bottle at 19.15pm. We put her down awake which is also something we never get to as she is so sleepy (this is beginning to make sense now.... my poor baby was sooo OT!!!)
She whimpered a bit, probably because she thought "Hey, this doesnt usually happen, Im usually asleep" I have been back into her twice, shhhh, pat and replaced the dummy. So im keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!!

One question, Ruby is at nursery 3 days a week. If she sleeps badly (e.g 30 mins all day)which happens more often and not as she gets disturbed so much at Nursery am I right in thinking she needs to go to bed earlier than 7pm? e.g 5.30-6 like you suggested?

Quick update. Just has the clockwork 10pm screaming fit (actually 10 mins later than usual) waking up sitting in cot, currently repeating the going in, reassuring and waiting a few mins extending it each time by 5 mins. 35 mins in and still screaming murder in her cot. Hate this it's an awful feeling :(
