6 month old will not eat solids.
« on: March 31, 2012, 11:58:25 am »
I have a very un hungry baby. She was fine until I had to stop breast feeding which was at 3 months. She barely takes  24 oz of formula a day. I have tried every solid I can think of and she just won't eat them I can get maybe 2 spoonfuls in before she refuses. She has never reached for the spoon with her mouth or ever been excited to eat solids. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this?

Hi, at this age you really don't need to worry about her apparent lack of interest in solids, she will eventually become more interested when she is ready.  Just keep offering but don't try to force her at all.
One great way to increase interest is to let her see you eat the exact same thing she is having.  Maybe just offer her something off your plate (nothing with salt, honey, the usually baddies) when you are having your own meal.  She might be more interested in finger foods than purees.  Babies love to copy their mummy.

My LO started solids one day when he was sitting on my knee while I was eating a banana.  He reached for it and put it in his mouth.  We were all a bit surprised - him included.  We kept the same kind of low-key approach going and it worked well.  For his first couple of weeks on solids, he sat on my knee and took things off the table if he was interested.  He really would've objected to having a spoonful of purée: it was always a nightmare to get him to take meds, for example.

Thanks! I just feel like everyone's know is having th easiest time when feeding solids! I made some sweet potatoes cut in little pieces and steamed and set them in a tray for her to grab and eat but to no avail, maybe someday! Thanks for the ideas though I will try them!

Have you tried at different times during the day? I place the food on the tray and let my wee one play with it a bit before trying to get her to eat it. Some days I think I can't give her enough solids and other days, she wants nothing to do with them. Letting her play with her food does help a bit. Are there any foods she does like?

The only food u have found that she will eat a tiny bit of is peas. I have tried the peas and brown rice too and she will eat that. But she will not eat and type of purée I make with peas she will only eat the baby food jar kind which is so frustrating!

Have you tried bananas? You can mash them but still leave a little bit of consistency to it. We found the really small ones our DD likes the best. Don't worry though, some days it's good and some days not so good, it is all about the experience at 6 months. You are doing a fabulous job and your wee one will eat, when she's ready. Hang in there!!

brown rice
I don't know about where you are but in the UK it is advised not to give brown rice, brown pasta etc.  It is harder to digest and can fill their tummies too much so they don't take as much other food/milk.  I know at this stage she won't have had much at all, just thought I'd mention it for when she really finds her appetite for solids.

With the finger foods 'finger' shape/size is easier for LOs to handle than small pieces.  There's also less chance of choking as they grasp it and gnaw on the end rather than put the whole piece in their mouths.

Don't worry.  She'll start taking more solids eventually and when she does you'll suddenly find it difficult to keep up with the number of meals and snack syou have to proved every day.  Wow it really took me by surprise!

Oh I didn't know that! I am in indiana in the US and they have an organic brand that has a bunch if different types of baby food and a lot of them have brown rice mixed it, it says in the jar 6 months +. I was just thinking if I could get any food in her it would be good! But that makes sense. I did try the sweet potatoes as more of a small "fry" shape that I steamed so she could hold it but she doesn't really eat them just kind if mushes them around in her mouth! I think she just isn't into food really haha I hope it gets better thanks for the encouragement!

This is totally normal for her age.  This is a massive new experience for her, just imagine how amazing and different it is for her to smell, touch, taste and feel the texture (both in her hands and mouth) of that new food.  She really does not ned to 'eat' (ingest) solids at this point, her food is still milk.  If you continue to offer a variety of new textures and flavours (just one thing a day is fine) she will be gradually eat more and more of it and (perhaps more importantly) will be getting used to all these flavours and textures.

Have you had a look at the BLW info?  There's a sticky thread where other mums are feeding finger foods, it's great for idea and support (and if you choose to give LO purees too there is no problem, it is your choice).

Hi

Just wanted to say my boy is the same 6 months and if I put food near him he just refuses, have tried morning noon and nighttime feeds and he is just not interested he thinks things on spoons or finger food is not for eating! I wouldn't mind but he wakes in the night for food so I know he is hungry! hand on in there I am sure our babes will soon get the hand of it!

hey just saw this and want to say don't worry about it. DS did not eat anything until 12 months! I tried everything, seriously everything. But he was just a boob boy. It was so frustrating for me, I would cook and puree and freeze and try baby led weaning and all sorts to no avail. Then about 3 days after his 1st birthday he started to eat and has not stopped. She will come to it when she is ready and there is nothing you can do to speed up the process - in fact that is not a bad lesson in general for all things - they get there in their own time and no matter how hard you try you can't change it!
