Laura I have thought of velcro but have not yet been able to find any that is adhesive so I can stick it to the window, and DH says it will ruin the window (we rent....but I say that DS has already coloured on walls and scratched floors so what's a window frame to paint added to our damages list? ::) ) But good to know I am not crazy with the velcro idea, I hope I can find some sticky stuff!!

Have any of you had moisture issues with the blackout being up all the time?

We have some of these but we haven't put them up yet as we haven't moved the girls to their new room yet.

Liz - we tried the sucker thing but the blinds just fell down! And we tried blackout blinds with blackout curtains but that doesn't seem to be enough either.

Imagine how lovely her room will be after some fresh air today. I'm going to open a window   .

Oh, that sounds so lovely...some year Spencer's room will get fresh air!  Finger crossed that the great sleep continues.

Mashi - why not try double sided tape to stick the velcro up if its not already got sticky stuff on and to remove the sticky stuff when you're done you can buy a product called "sticky stuff remover" its a spray and you just spray it on and the sticky stuff wipes right off.

Clare, the same easyblackout blinds were recommended from previous threads.

just wondering if people have very sunny windows and whether these curtains would be scorched?   (ahem, like the bin bags, they smelled awful, tin was far superior)

We did until I changed from black cardstock on the windows to a dark coloured bedsheet tacked all around - it breaths so that the moisture doesn't stay all day...

This is what we have too...dark flannel sheets ::) ugly! (but kind of hidden behind blinds)

Perhaps that is/was the problem when I had the Baa Baa blind tacked up - it is plastic on one side so it wasn't breathing.  The white stuff around the window (is it still called caulking when it is on a window vs when it is on your bathtub? I don't know what else to call it?) has turned black from mildew.  It is a common enough problem here in Germany and you are supposed to wipe down your windows every morning and afternoon, and we don't do it often enough anyway so all of our windows have been ruined, but the one in DS's bedroom is particularly bad.  Ugh.

Koe the only time I had problems with scorching was at our house in England, I had just a massive sheet of cardboard up over the window. I think it was the box his pram came in and I just opened it flat and sliced it into panels and put it snug into the window.  One day I wanted to air out the room and when I lifted the carboard off it was BURNING hot.  Silly me just put it back again and when we took it down permanently when we moved it had been slowly burning!!

Mashi, which direction is MM's windows facing?  At our last place, it was full west, so it was scorching hot but with the foil, it was cooler.  Then i used black binbags and we smelled yucky plastic smell when there was sun, and that got Dh to move quickly to put the curtain rails up.  It is leaking lights from above :( so i might still have to add something like the easy blackout blinds.

Wait, if you get mildew, perhaps it is on the north side.

No, mildew is part of life here, makes no difference which way you face or what you do.  They sell special window wiping cloths and you are supposed to wipe your windows 2x per day....amongst a dozen other "rules" that we have which are all meant to keep the moulds away.  It is extreme and it is just part of how the buildings here were built (slapped-up post-war) and the climate as well.
