20 minute naps! advise please?
« on: April 06, 2012, 19:44:40 pm »
Hi

My 6 month old has suddenly decided the last few days to stat having 20 minute naps! he used to be fine, we would often have 45 minute naps but I could get him through them occasionally or we could manage to get the next nap longer... he does seam to be teething and possibly has a snuffly cold could this be why? I have spent hours trying to get him back to sleep with no luck and oddly he behaves like he has had a full nap and isn't grouchy at all, I have read though the forum about over stimulation which I don't think he has but I will try and do more of a wind down with him before his nap just incase, does anyone have any other advise?

Also what age do they usually go from 3 naps to 2?

Thanks
Lucy

It does sound like your LO is UT or it could be teeth causing the nap WU at 20 mins. Often LOs stir at this time when in discomfort. Have you tried medicating before naps to see ofit helps?

It is at 6 months on avge that they move to 2 naps. Can you post a typical day, or today's EAsY? :-*

;) your right UT= under tired, not tired enough to sleep fora decent length of time or transition through sleep cycles.

Thanks Hun

Hi

Here is my easy ..

6:30 wake
7:00 milk
9:00 sleep - 20 minutes or 45, occasionally 1 - 2 hrs
11:00 milk
12.00 offer solids (just started last few weeks)
12.30 - 1ish sleep 20 or 45 minutes occasionally 1 - 2 hrs
3:00 - milk - if had 2 short naps then I offer a nap now if not try for cap nap at 5.30
5;00 - solids
6:30 bath bed
11pm dream feed
he doesn't usually wake in the night at all and if he has had 20 minute nap I ususally offer a another nap an hour or so after he has woken but then it throws up off track for the rest of easy...

Hi

Is there anyone who can advise, I have tweaked my easy but still the naps are a nightmare here is our day.....

7am wake
7.15 bottle
8am offer breakfast
9am nap - 20 - 40 minutes max
11 bottle
12.00 lunch if tired put down but usually showing no signs
1.00 nap 20 - 40 minute
3pm bottle
4.30 nap - 10 - 30 minute
5pm tea
6pm bath wind down
7pm bottle bed
11pm dream feed

I have tried EVERYTHING overtired, undertired (by extending first activity time, reducing it, doing wind down) shh pat, medication (worked at first and thought it was that but tried a week or so later after continual short naps and didn't make a difference!) he is quite happy when he wakes up and sleeps all night but surely this can't be right, my daughter was text book and had 2 hours am and pm from what now feels like the moment she was born, is this just him is he a short napper and this is all he needs, is there anyone who know if this is just the norm for some babies, should I just sit back and accept this is him or does anyone have any tips on persisitng or possibly any solutions??

Thanks in advance for any reply

Sorry Hun I'm not sure how I missed your post!
I think you need to increase that first A time closer to 2.5-3 hours and then give yor LO a week to adjust. If he wakes early at least your will have ore chance of resettling if he is more tired.

If you get a good nap then offer the next nap 3 hrs later. But if you gets short nap you need to offer the next one earlier, like 2 hrs later to prevent OT. You end up in a bit of an Ut/OT loop ( we've all been there!)

What do you think? X

Thanks, I tried about 2hrs 15 & 2hrs 30 but think that's a good idea to try a 3 hr activity, he hasn't been showing much signs of tiredness except a bed time, is 3 hrs activity considered long for a 7month old?

No 3 hrs is good, I just wasn't sure how much A you had tried, and your EASY showed a short first A ;)

If your not too worried about OT I would try this, and stick with it a week for your LO to adjust. Then see how things are (change to suit WU)
WU 7
A 3
Nap 10-11.30 if wakes early try to resettle
A 3
Nap 2.30-4
A 3
BT 7

If you get a short nap and can't resettle then bring the second A forward 20 mins ;)
