BFing and menstruation
« on: April 11, 2012, 22:39:03 pm »
Okay, this is kind of related to BFing and kind of not, but I figured that if this has happened to anyone, it would be someone on this board!

It seems that my period has disappeared. DS is 9mo and has been BF since birth with no issues and my period came back when he was 7mo (January). I had another regular one in February and it's now been 7 weeks since I've seen Aunt Flo. I've already taken two pregnancy tests (one two weeks ago and one two days ago) and both were negative. I have no idea what is going on. Especially since I'm not breastfeeding as much anymore now that we've cut all NFs with the sleep training we've done (he's on 4 feeds a day, down from about 8 feeds two months ago).

Has this happened to anyone else? Period came back and then disappeared suddenly? With DS1, it came back when he was 4mo and then was very normal and regular after that. I didn't have to wait longer than 4.5 weeks to see it... so this is new and really scary...

Ha, yes! I started having AF when my ds was 3.5 months (Jan) and it was a normal 28 day cycle. Last month it was 36 days (for some reason I ov'ed really late). Now this month I'm at CD35 and no sign yet of AF (and I do not think I ov'ed late this month).

With my dd and also with ds1, I was regular from the first pp AF I had. None of this guessing stuff!  ::)

I have heard of this before, I think it can just still be erratic whilst still bf. mine didn't return until I'd stopped bf completely with both girls.

Oh yes - and I'm even on the mini pill! I was having super short cycles and suddenly I'm a week late! Wooo hooo! As my dr put it - while you're BFing your hormones are up and down...plus take into consideration exercise, diet, etc, and it's easy to get everything out of whack. If you're worried, of course talk to your GP, but I'd say give it a couple of months and see if it regulates...

It is very common for af not to be regular for quite some time pp, and also while bf'ing. If you are concerned then go to your doc, but I suspect that you will be told that it is normal - my af came back much earlier this time than with the previous 2, and has been kind of all over the shop since it did come back.

Well, apparently my new cycle runs 36+ days. I am @ CD37 today and AF arrived. Who knows what would've happened if I had actually *exercised* this month! :P  ::)

With DD1 mine was regular at 4.5 months.  With DD2 she is 5 months & still no regular period.  I have had a single spotting incident every 2 weeks though from month 3 on & I'm BF quite regularly - go figure!  Wreaking havoc on my underwear :) At first I thought something was seriously wrong with me - but I actually hope it takes another couple months (or longer) to get regular again.

AF returned here @8m (August).  Since then I've had 40d, 31d, 30d x3 (thought it was getting regular!), 25d, 27d x2.  Previously a 25-29d cycle. So confused.

Thanks for your input, ladies! Finally, AF returned after a lovely 45 day hiatus. Freaked.me.out. I was driving DH crazy figuring out my due date and fretting about having 3 babies under 3 even though, as DH said, you have to have sex to get pregnant. ;)

Oh good!!! I was all happy about mine being late (thinking it was just irregular as I am on BC) and woke up this morning completely sick to my stomach and gagging. Took a test and it's "inconclusive" to me...a thin fine positive line. So now I have a call in to my nurse for bloodwork. Sigh. And omg... I should have known not to say "woo hoo"!!!!!!!

Oh my!  ;D A fine line is still a line, and + to me. ;) Are you sure of when you ov'ed?

Will you test at home again, or are you just going to go to the doctor?

Mama2C - Holy moly!!! Inconclusive is worse than positive or negative right? And you're on BC? Man, that would be rough if you are indeed preggo. You're going to have to let us know!

Yes! AF arrived when DS was about 2 months. He is almost 5 months now and the only sign of AF was a tiny red spot about 2 weeks ago and that's it.

As you become more clear about who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you - the first time around

I took two home preg tests - both very fine and faint positive lines so went for bloodwork yesterday. Very very nervous about results as this is just not the time I'd want to be preggo. I was indeed on BC...the mini pill...!

And yes, inconclusive was horrible for me....just not sure what to think and so I'm trying NOT to think about it!!
