Toddler baking ideas
« on: April 12, 2012, 16:36:35 pm »
I'd like to start baking with L. Was thinking of starting with some simple cookies, oat and raisin perhaps. Just something simple to start.

Was wondering what you bake/cook with your toddler? Hopefully we can share some ideas :)

TIA

Fairy cakes
jam tarts - for rolling and cutting.  (the pastry then ended up being more like playdough - then I got on and did the tarts!)

Ooh I'm listening in too if that's ok? :-* We've not done any baking with C as such yet. We did make Easter nests at the weekend which was fun! ;D

She loves trying to roll her playdough so I'll definitely give the jam tarts a go and she loves using the stamps/cutters so I'll do biscuits. Darn it though- I'm trying to diet so this is not good!! ::)

We make different stuff - cakes, cookies, even good ole rice krispie buns!  DS started showing an interest when he was about 3 - he's now 6 and if I help him weigh out the ingredients for a cake he knows what order to mix everything in.

Annabel Karmel has a good kids cookbook "You Can Cook" - we've done quite a few things out of it.

Mmm cheese scones - I love that idea. Might try tomorrow.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions - I'm all inspired to give it a go now. Just hope she doesn't eat all the ingredients before they are made!

Well, we started with cheese scones this morning and it went pretty well considering that the whole concept of putting food in a bowl, stirring it but NOT eating it is a new and thoroughly confusing one for L LOL. We ate them with our lunch and they were yummy :)

Was definitely a good first one cos the whole process to getting them in the oven took about 15 mins max (poss less) and L was getting a bit bored by then (obv cos she couldn't appreciate why she wasn't allowed to eat anything yet!). She was v impressed when we saw them cooking in the oven and then when they came out. Will def be doing more baking with her again soon.

I've got a really simple cake that consists of putting everything in the food processor, mixing it and then baking it - ideal for toddlers! Happy to post it here if you want it.
