Canadian mummies!!!
« on: April 21, 2012, 19:47:54 pm »
We will be coming to Vancouver island for Christmas, ds2 is dairy free and I need some milk alternatives for him. We currently use coconut milk here in the uk but luckily da2 is not fussy and will also drink soy ( not my preferred option), hemp and oat milk. I need some brand names so I can send the inlaws shopping so we will have some milk for our visit. Can you help!!! Ds2 will be 2 by then so it's not a main part of his diet but I don't have a clue on Canadian brands and realise that shopping on the island will be different to what I can get in Vancouver itself iykwim.

That's brilliant thanks so much they usually shop at whole foods so that will be just fine - its much easier to find things if you have a brand name!

No idea since I don't have to worry about that stuff, but wanted to wave at you from the island  :) :) :) and let you know that if you need to know anything else regional I could maybe help!

I hope you enjoy your visit!!!  :-*

Hello! Yay again for Vancouver Island. Great choice for Christmas too btw  but I hope you don't expect snow ;)

I ran right to the fridge and took a pic. I buy this at Thrifty's and its usually $2.99 CAD so not bad at all.

It comes in plain, sweetened and chocolate. I mix half and half with unsweetened and chocolate for E as a treat. She is super sensitive to trace dairy, gluten, soy and citric acid amongst other things and she does really well on this. There are also other types of coconut and soy based drinks in that same section though we've not tried them.

Thanks so much ladies. We've been before just not with two monkeys in tow. I can honestly say I'm not looking forward to Christmas dinner with a very jet lagged 2 and 4 yr old!! And the weather, well it's just like being at home!! Hopefully the inlaws will babysit for us and we can sneak off and do a bit of skiing if there's any snow on the mountains!

Vicki - I didn't know you were an island girl!!!  ME TOO!  I am from Nanaimo ;)

I was gonna suggest So Delicious coconut milk... you can get it in the vacuum tetra pack like the one Vicki posted or you can get a 2L carton in the cold section (like cow's milk container)..   Save On Foods carries it!  There is an unsweetened, original (has added sugar), vanilla and chocolate (I think!).

Ok totally going to start another thread for a meet up sometime this summer!

And I'll be checking the 2l one out. I've not seen it.

Just wanted to add that Emma has been on this stuff for about two weeks and no reaction whatsoever. It's on sale which is the great thing because here in Canada, dairy is at a fixed rate and they don't have sales on milk. They do on cheese and yogurt products but not actual milk. So it's nice to get a bargain. These cartons are on sale for the rest of the month for $2.50 which is pretty reasonable. They also have coconut milk in it's pure form for about $2-3.00 per can.
