Canines might be the end of us.... **update over???**
« on: April 29, 2012, 18:52:52 pm »
Ugh, the pain, the pain, the pain!  :o Just when feeding on the left breast. I cannot get her to latch on in any way shape or form on that side without it really hurting. The right side is a dream and absolutely fine. I am assuming this is teeth- canines. They're not cutting but are almost there. It's been like this for the last 3 nights (am only feeding at BT now).  :-\

Any tips/ideas?

Thanks :-*

Have you tried giving her pain meds or teething gel (or both) just before a feed? Perhaps if she wasn't in pain when feeding she might be able to latch on without causing you pain.

I'd say the same thing, unless it's a positioning issue?
Not best placed to comment much as D is only just getting her 2nd tooth and it's a long time since I was BF DS!!

Oh, another thing - are you sure it's the latch that's the problem? I have a lot of pain feeding ds when he is teething not because there is anything different about is latch but because his saliva gets really acidic when he is teething (it really irritates his face too) - perhaps some lansinoh for you would help?

This happened to me with R! From about 15 months she only ever has fed from my left breast!

Thanks ladies for your suggestions. I'll try and reposition her. I'm pretty sure it's not intentional as when I say ow and gentle, she looks at me like huh?! It's like she's just pressing or something. It's really bizarre.

Thanks again. :)

Well the last two nights  were back to normal and lovely and no idea what was different....

But tonight C refused a BF at BT for the first time and wanted milk in a cup! :o It was so unexpected (I asked her a couple of times if she wanted boob and got no) I was not prepared for this at all and feel really sad. Didn't drink much cow's milk from DH either. I know I'm proud that she is growing up and that we got so far
especially after the start we had but still.... :'(

Am secretly hoping contrary Mary will be back to her boob addict self tomorrow or would you see it as a sign she's ready to stop and just offer milk in a cup?

:'(

{{{hugs Nicola}}}}

I tended to offer and if she didn't want it I just left it.  I would keep offering if you hadn't planned to wean yet.  If in a couple of weeks she has refused every night I would say she's weaning herself but its early days yet.

Thanks lovely :-*

I probably will just offer and see how it goes. In many ways if she self-weans that will be fab as up to now I've been the one to stop offering feeds and she's always handled it fine but I thought this BT feed would be more tricky. I wanted to move it before brushing teeth because we still haven't done that yet :-[ so I guess now is a good time to start.

It just completely bowled me over. Normally she is hurriedly kissing DH and diving from him to me for her feed but all she seemed to want was her Daddy. That sounds terrible to be upset about but I think it was the shock yk? :'(

Not terrible to be upset at all.   Its hard because BFing is such a special thing that is just between you and your LO so when it starts to come to an end it is so emotional.  I cried loads when i weaned M even though it was right for us at the time.

Big hugs.  I think I'd carry on offering too, but am yet to get to that stage here.  With DS it was just obvious he wasn't interested in BF anymore and just as happy with a bottle (he'd been mixed fed) so I did his last BF on his first birthday and was done. :(

Hugs - it is an emotional time whenever we see our babies moving on to the next step, whatever that is. I think shiv is right - offer for a little while, but if she keeps refusing then accept that she is done. Well done for keeping going for so long, though - that's awesome!
