Television!!!!
« on: May 05, 2012, 04:58:14 am »
So DD is O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D with Shaun the Sheep which we get on Netflix.  This girl wakes in the morning asking for it.  I really try to stick to an hour of screen time a day and so she knows she may watch 2 episodes in the morning and later after lunch.  This is pretty standard except for occasions like illness when she's stuck on  the couch all day, and there's no way I can say no to the poor thing, or when occasion arises that I need her occupied for a bit longer.  This obsession has lasted for about 3 months now, how kids don't get bored of watching the same thing over and over and over again I will never know?  She's had obsessions before, Dora, Diego, Curious George, you name it.  They all pass eventually but I'm ready for this obsession to pass NOW!!!  It is not the least bit educational in the way I'd like for it to be and I am soooooo sick of it!!!!
So does anyone have any advice to help us get past it?  I'd gladly introduce her to another obsession as long as it's got something educational about it, counting, alphabet, solving problems, etc.  I am not looking to exclude television completely.  It's very handy with a 6 month old and it's a great way to get some sanity back in my day at times.

DD love Mickey Mouse but we aren't able to get it here at home.  She loves to watch it when we make a trip to Grandma's house though.

^^My DD is obsessed with that too!!! She calls it MEMEE and grabs the remote and give it to us so we can put it on.
We also try to limit TV the most possible, but sometimes is hard, specially during weekends if I'm cooking or cleaning the house she get's bored with her toys.

good point.  I will check the library.  I'm remembering that DD does like Elmo. Here's hoping it's enough.
As of yesterday (due to incessant whining) Shaun the Sheep is no longer a daily thing at our house. :)

Can you get other UK shows? If you can get others from Cbeebies there are some good ones like "Show Me, Show Me" and "Same Smile" which are a bit more educational. Really most of the shows on that channel are good!

The Wiggles are very popular with my two (all DD wants for her birthday this month is a Dorothy the Dinosaur cake ;D) and they do love Shaun too (has she seen Timmy Time - all about his little cousin going to Nursery!).

DH likes Shaun the sheep! I think it's the humor. Got to agree though not much learning from it. But on the upside it's not full of OS lights and flickering ;)

Z is also starting to like MM clubhouse.

Navoo will your Dd read books or do puzzles while watching or does she just zone out?

This show saves my sanity at the moment!  I get a nice cuppa first thing in the morning while she dances her little heart out!  And, it's been known to help with dinner prep as well :)

she totally zones out with Shaun but not with other things. I tried to convince her to watch Elmo today but she wasn't having it so she watched Arthur which I think is too advanced for her but she loved it. :-\

Exact same feeling!
But I feel bad letting her watch so much TV. I try my best to play with her and do puzzles or other activities, but yes TV is a life saver when you need time for other things.

DD loves all of those but we don't get them at home.  I would run to the library but I've given my fair share of money to them for late fees and I'm not willing to risk more.  It's way to easy to forget when they are due with every thing else I need to remember.  Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have the wiggles or those other UK programs so I might really try to push elmo if she'll go with it anyways.  Has anyone heard of Caillou?  I'm wondering about it, I'm hesitant to start an obsession and then regret it. :-\

Caillou will make you want to stick a fork in your eye.

Curious George is the top dog in our house at the moment...erm top monkey lol  It's actually a good show!  I totally enjoy it.  Finn has already learned about selling lemonade to buy your own soccer ball, how traffic lights work and how to play miniature golf.  It really can teach them stuff.

It's also on Netflix here in Canada...not sure about USA.  Sadly you guys have a much better Netflix than we do.

LOVE Netflix!!!!  And yes we do have Curious George.  DD loved him awhile back when we got it on our tv but then ran into Dora which took her to Diego and in an effort to stop the madness we turned to Shaun the Sheep (Grandpa's advice).  I will reintroduce George and I'm sure she'll like it again.
thanks for the advice about Caillou.  A friend I have suggested it and I had never heard of it before.

If whining is already bothering you in your household, do not watch Caillou (nickname Cry-ou) lol

I'll have to look for this sheep thing.  He liked Dora but went off her recently.  Fickle little kid.

My fave part of Netflix is knowing exactly how long a show is...and knowing that we don't have time for it LOL I can say 'nope that's 23 min long and we only have 11' so he hasn't had a comeback for that yet other than to break down and cry.

well Caillou is an out then because we sure don't need any more whining.  Shaun the sheep was producing exactly that.
Wendy, if you look up Shaun do it for yourself and spare Finn.  It is actually amusing for adults, at least it was for me the FIRST time I watched them, not the 100th.

My DD needs music and dancing
We have a nursery rhymes DVD which is appalling quality acting/dancing/singing/miming/filming but DS LOVES it!  It's like a karaoke with the nursery rhyme words printed at the bottom of the screen, he totally loves to dance and bop along and loves that it's all children doing the singing/acting.  We sometimes dance to it together and he has a big box of musical instruments and we get those out and l=play along with the tunes too.  I'm pretty sure he learned how to turn around on the spot from watching the 'teddy bear teddy bear' rhyme.  It amazes me how much he does learn from TV and DVDs as I was always convinced TV was a big bad no no.  I think I was wrong.

oh and he also learned how to turn on the TV, the DVD and make it play - things that DP and I still have difficulty doing!  When Nana said to me one day, 'I think he wants his rhymes DVD he has the box out, how do I turn it on?' I replied, 'I haven't a clue just let him do it himself'

Actually more and more research is showing that tv/dvd/ipad etc. are helping children learn, and cope with social situations.  Example would be say DD1 has a hard time with going to the library.  So I find a show that portrays a young child going to the library and what you do at the library.  They are finding that these types of things are helping children to not only learn but also to be able to adapt to situations.

My two have picked up some surprising things from some of their shows! DS loves a show called "I can Cook" - he knows some quite technical language now!

My two have a new favourite show called "Tree Fu Tom", the main character does magic spells and invites those watching to help him make the spells. They have to follow a series of physical movements to make the spell and the programme was developed with the British Dyspraxic society - the actions they do are to help children's physical development, it's great!

"Tree Fu Tom"
DS loves this too.  Some programmes like this one he will wonder off and play with something else whilst it is on but he knows the parts he enjoys, the movement part is great and he always go back to the TV for that.  He does try to join in some of the moves even though he isn't quite 16 months yet and I know he is watching the moves carefully even though he doesn't do them all.
Really interesting that it was developed with the dyspraxic society, I had no idea, just thought it was a great idea to get kids moving and interacting with the TV show.  I thought it was based on some martial art (Tree Foo like kungfoo?).  I also like the 'yogo' (yoga) in Waybuloo which DS loves.

Alexandra did some Yogo this morning while watching Waybuloo!  She actually asks for this show when she is crabby/OS/OT!  Funny enough, it really calms her down!  She will demand that me or DH sit on the couch so she can lounge on us and watch it!

It gets DS really chilled out too.  He has watched Waybuloo every eve before the BT routine since as far back as I can remember because I needed something to occupy him whilst I ran the bath, got his bottle ready, his meds, stuffed the night boosters in the nappy etc.  I wouldn't want him to watch anything up-beat before his bath and bed but that prog is so calm I don't think he could ever get OS from it.
