Sensory Play
« on: May 07, 2012, 21:26:50 pm »
I have always done this with my toddlers, but on,y just learnt its fancy name through pinterst  ::) :P.

Jacob often gets given a tub of something to play tractors in etc etc. But Megan has done less as when Sweep was a puppy he would just eat and spillages, which was annoying  >:(. So I kind of stopped doing it.

Anyway - my question is what sort of age is this stuff good up until??? Is Jacob getting a bit old now? I hope not as I have a ton of ideas!!

We still do heaps of it in Nursery and Reception - and Oscar still loves it in his free time even though he's UK aged yr1.

Sensory play is good for all of us - I love playdough even now - and moon sand - that's my fave!!!

I don't think there is an age limit! I think sensory play is fabulous! I really should be doing more of it with the kids. We just got a water table for DS's birthday so I am excited to set that up. DD used to love our rice, beans and pasta bin and also enjoys shaving cream in the tub and the sandbox, of course!

Sensory stuff is great for developing handwriting as well. Our OT where I used to work would have kids do a lot of sensory things to have an extra sense of feeling what they needed to do to formulate letters....trace with their fingers over sandpaper, use a pencil on paper over top of screen material, popping the air filled bubbles that come inside of shipping packages, etc.

I should let her finger paint and all of that!

Come back and share your "ton of ideas"!!!!!!!!

I don't think he is too old at all Liz - it is still a big thing in primary schools here.  And children do not even START in primary school until after their 6th birthday! So J has lots of time left!!

Share your ideas, too please :)

Yep - Ozzie is UK aged yr 1 so 5-6yrs. There isn't enough of it in Yr 1 + in my opinion....plenty in Reception and below and then suddenly none at all....

DD is 5.5, and she still does stuff like this!!!  She has a sand table, a big stand-up one that we bought from a preschool who was upgrading...and there are starfish, seashells in it, and those little glass beads that are made to go in the bottom of a vase of flowers?  She will make castels and press the shells into them, bury them and find them again....it's great!
