Am I doing this right?
« on: May 11, 2012, 16:11:39 pm »
Hello,

I am a first time mum and have a rather lovely two week old son.  I have been given the baby whisperer book as a gift and personally think it's fab!

We are currently working to a three hour routine.  It is sometimes out by about half an hour but generally not too bad.

I am breast feeding, we have activity time and then baby goes for a sleep.  My issue is that he has gone from feeding for 40 minutes to 20 to 25 minutes.

I was wandering if iI wasn't producing enough milk but I express and seem to be doing ok, plus baby seems to manage roughly until the following feed.  Is it ok that he is only feeding for 25 ish minutes now?

Also, we are doing the cluster feeds at 6 and 8 which he is woken up for - is that right?  How long should a cluster feed last for because he is also falling alseep during these - although he does fall asleep during most feeds and I have to wake him although I am not waking him if he falls asleep during the 8pm cluster feed, I leave him for 20 minutes then put him back to bed and He'll last until 2.30 am (there is also a dream feed at 1030 pm)

Am I doing things right as I am a bit of a worrier and want to do everything right for him!

Thanks guys

Sounds like you are doing perfectly - don't worry! I know it is hard not to stress with number one, but honestly it sounds like things are fantastic for you. It is perfectly normal for them to become more efficient at feeding - the key indicator is not how long they feed for, but how long they can go till the next feed and how contented they are.

Keep it up - you're doing great!

Just wanted to agree.  Sounds like you are doing fab.  Well done you guys xx

It may take a while to get up to 3 hourly feeds so don't worry about that too much and there is a pretty big growth spurt at 3 weeks ish so if things go a bit pear shaped and he wants to feed all the time know that is normal!!

COngratulations on your wee bundle xxx
