just interested really. Went to an AMAZING talk last night given by a GP who is also a homeopath and it was so interesting. It was about treating children naturally through acute illnesses so how to deal with a fever etc without reaching for calpol.

She also talked about general health and said it was so important for children (in terms of general health) to not only get lots of fresh air outdoors but also to have a window open in their rooms.

So...do you? We don't atm because of noise/light etc but I will probably give it a go as mine are pretty snotty lo's and she said for those type of children it was really beneficial.

I know abut safety issues and not talking about a big open window - just a little...

It sounds like a great idea but I don't think I could do it!

we actually have a small vent open the last few nights but it felt so cold to me.  Does she mean during sleep specifically?
ADD:  i also noticed that once DS realised that certain noises are like background noise, such as, the neighbour's dog barking midnight, flights over our heads, then he was fine and just continue.  Even DH's heavy typing sound as he works around the clock at home.

I just don't know how to have really wide open window when it is summer, and the breeze or wind would blow at the blackout blinds!!   ???

Yep, but its warm here ;)

DS' window has been wide open almost constantly since he was ~3 months old... It is on the second storey with nothing to climb, so no baby-snatching without us noticing. Thinking we'll close it a bit tonight as its starting to get chilly (down to 12 celcius outside!).

I've heard about making sure rooms are well ventilated.  We have vents on our windows which we leave open although i have had them closed of late as it has been so cold.  Mine both like to be warm at night (as do I!) and dont' think they'd be impressed with the draft from outside if it was cold!

We do about 50% of the time in winter and 90% of the time in summer. I find spring and fall harder because the temperature is so unpredictable but do open it depending on the weather.

I think that sleeping in a closed room for 12h with the bedroom door shut and no ventilation is unreasonable for my DS - in the morning you walk into his room on the nights when the window has been closed and the whole room is just stuffy and stinky.   The heater is below the window, so the fact that the window is open means that the heating kicks in (ie in the winter) and I keep the heat on very low to try to balance out the waste of energy.  In the summer the heat is obviously off so not an issue but in the spring and fall it is harder because we can have massive temperature swings either way!  Sometimes I open it after he has gone to sleep and close it when I go to bed or sometimes I just open it when I go to bed. Other nights I might peek in on him if I wake to go to the bathroom and if it is hot/cold open/close the window as needed.   I used to worry that the extra noise in the mornings, especially in summer, with birds, traffic etc would wake him early but if he is too hot then he will wake anyway so we don't really find any issues with it.

We don't because the birds would wake him up at 4am  ::)

I open the window in the morning when he gets up, let the room air for as long as necessary, then close it again. On hot days it will be open until he goes to bed, on cold days for an hour. His room door is open all day except for during nap time, and although it's closed at night it fits so badly there is plenty of ventillation through the big gap at the bottom of it  ::)

I ALWAYS want a window open in a bedroom, even if it's cold out (although I am talking UK cold not US cold) I would rather have more blankets and some fresh air. Me and DH fight over it. I REALLY want to open a window in the kid's room but right now I can't even get to the window b/c the whole lot is taped over with bin liners and masking tape  ::)

We have open windows in the summer (here it is warm enough) but we keep them closed in the winter. I couldn't leave with an open window for long periods when it is cold!
But we keep DS's door open, so air is not blocked in his room for several hours.

Can't have open windows here cause of the sand and humidity,  but interested to know what the dr suggested to use for lowering a fever? Other than calpol?

I often have them open during the day to air the room - and then close at bedtime. In the summer I shut them before I go to bed. That is often what we do ourselves as well, mainly because DH goes nuts when the birds start singing in the summer. Personally I would prefer the air movement.

I have recently experimented with letting light in and it has made no difference to either of them  :). So leaving a window open is an interesting idea for us as it would not be a physical issue.

Me too Anna! In the winter especially I wake up in the night and open the window when DH is sleeping.  Sometimes I wake up in the morning and he has woken and closed it (grrr!) but most of the time he doesn't notice but yet still complains the next night when I try to open it before bed.   I just prefer the fresh air!

DH and I sleep with the windows at least on the vents all year - and pretty much everyone normally complains our house is cold! As soon as it's higher than 11 or 12C at night outside I'll pop the kids on the vent too. They do sleep with the windows open In The summer but I sometimes have to close them because our neighbours are SO loud when they're in the garden!

We have the vents open but not usually the windows in winter. I open them in summer but we can lock them about an inch open so no danger of someone climbing in. We do suffer with noise though living in a terrace. And I can hear those flippin birds at 4am even with the windows closed.

Here in Sydney Australia we get way too hot in summer to leave windows open and then cold and draughty in winter so not possible for most of the time. We don't have vents on our windows either, that would be handy!
