Ideas for OT/OS baby?
« on: May 17, 2012, 13:51:37 pm »
We're having a bit of a nightmare with little Audrey recently, it's been suggested that she may be hugely OT and OS, and I'm just wondering if you have any ideas for trying to limit that. Bearing in mind she does have a four-year-old brother to whom the concept of overstimulation is completely alien!

BUT: today I will pick her up from the childminder and she will be HUGELY overtired and overstimulated too. I will fetch her at 4.30 and her 'normal' bedtime is 6.30. I have DH lined up to care for Stan, if needs be I can go straight upstairs with Audrey and do nothing but lie on a bed with her until bedtime - at 6pm? 5.30pm? - if that would help?

Also tomorrow I have her home with me and Stan is at nursery. Normally I would take her to a baby class/group at 11am but we can easily skip that - if you have any tips or ideas for giving her a nice relaxed day and how much I can feasibly scale back her A time to help her catch up on sleep.

Finally, for the weekend we have no plans outside the home as yet, and I can certainly try to protect her from too much going on - if you have any ideas for some low-key activities that would be good for her. If she was 3 months old I would take to my bed and just nurse and nap and cuddle all day, but at this stage she will be crawling off the bed  ::)

Please?? ???

One thing I do with M is a huge winddown before his naps... 20 minutes, of being upstairs, singing and walking with him. Not sure if it would work for her since she's mobile though.

Does she like the baby carrier? Could you go for walks with her in one? I find that keeps them interested but also limits stimulation, especially if she's facing you.

I really hope this is the answer and that things will get better for you soon Anna. You've worked so hard on this.  (((HUGS)))

Stroller walks seem to be pretty low key.  Wyatt was mobile at that age but putting him in the sling and doing light housework/walks seemed pretty low key and kept him happy as well.  Car rides are also low key for us and often serve to bridge gaps in the day.

I say motion, anything motion lol...walking, sling, car, stroller.

Hugs Anna.

...its what you do when you get back up.

I was going to say the sling too, if you had her in the sling before naptime would you be able to put her down if she fell asleep early for her nap? We used to keep L's last A time like one long winddown, curtains closed, no TV in the background and I would try and get her to feed as much as pos. Like Zoey said walking with the pushchair somewhere quiet (I know not easy in London  :P). I don't know if I am too late but maybe you could take her upstairs when you get home and just cuddle and feed and see when she drops off. How is she with baths? Maybe a lavender baby bath as soon as she gets home may help but if I remember right evening baths were too stimulating for L at 6 months.

I use the baby sling when Alyssa is OS, I put her in it and do housework, up to 2 hrs!! No Tv, No radio, just us cleaning. I do 15 min max baths for a wind down and a long cuddle in the rocking chair in her room before bed.

I think we did OK. She had a 2hr nap at the childminder in the afternoon, but only 15 mins in the morning. She was very tired and sad when I picked her up. She had a little 'rest' on my boob when we got home, and seemed revived by that. Then I put her in the sling and we went for a walk in the park across the road. We DID have Stan with us so there was a lot of chatter, and watching him race around, but she did well - she definitely would not have stayed calm throughout the time period if we had been at home and playing... I think being outdoors AND in the sling was a good combo for her. We got home at 5.40 and went straight upstairs - she got a bit upset getting ready for bed but nursed and was asleep by 6.05.

She really loves a bath and sits quite calm and happy in it (unless Stan is in there too of course). But she was just too tired today.

Fingers crossed for a good night, that sounds like a good compromise taking S to the park but A stays in the sling, hopefull the fresh air will help  ;)

All good suggestions, glad the walk with her in the sling helped keep her calm. I think EBT is a good idea though that's because it has worked so well for DS and there are babies it doesn't work for...

Fingers crossed for you xx
