Yep, we're in the same dilemma - as we speak I'm sitting in the nursery watching my lo refuse to nap....

Im trying to stick with a fixed morning a time (2hr 15) then read cues from there. It seems to be giving us a times of between 2 15 and 2 30 for my five month old, and one good nap, one mediocre nap, then hit or miss with the catnap. No advice to offer really!

Exactly the same for us too. I think LO was getting in an OT mess as we were pushing A times too much (she's 6 months on Saturday). I have taken that first A right back to 2hrs & getting a decent 1hr 45 nap so I guess she definitely likes a shorter first A, 2nd A of 2hr 15/30 & getting anything from an hour to 1 hour 30 (only got 35 mins this afternoon though  :( but had baby sensory just before so think she was OS) & then is generally refusing her CN so if there is time I get her in the pram for a bit of a snooze. She just does not like the cot after about 3pm!

Hang on in there girls I'm sure we can all crack this soon  :D

Elise - how was your nap after 2h45 min today?

We have had a whole 40 min nap then 1h15 min nap.  The 40 min nap was after 2h40 min A and so then we did a 2h30 min second A (she was not acting tired at all so I just put her down as I thought that was ridiculous) and we got a 1h15 min nap!  ERRR!!  Yesterday we had 1h30 and then 1h20 after 2h35/2h40A times so I thought I was on to something. Apparently not!  She has woke up crying but as soon as she sees me she is happy and chatting.  Since weaning the paci and swaddle I am still not able to resettle a nap.

Elise - how was your nap after 2h45 min today?

I didn't get to try it :( today was a weird day, we had a HUGE t-storm around 5AM which woke both LO's. DS ended up going back to sleep and sleeping until 8:30AM ??? since I had a lunch downtown, I had to get his first nap in the car or it would've been too late. usually he's up by 6:30 so I can ALWAYS get his first nap home but it didn't work today. plus we're having a patio constructed in our backyard so it's super noisy, so I don't know what to do for the next few days... there's no way he's going to get a good nap at home anyway so I'm kind of screwed. I think I'll try to push A times to 2h45 anyway, to get him used to it, but I'll see how I feel tomorrow morning.

She has woke up crying but as soon as she sees me she is happy and chatting

yes DS does that a lot too... soo frustrating!

hope you get it right soon, keep me posted so we can work through this together! :)

So! Today I put him down after 2h40 (in the playpen in my room since there was too much noise in the back) and he slept for 1h15! I actually put him down after 2h40 thinking he'd take 5 minutes to fall asleep but he was pretty much out right away. It's the first long first nap I get in a while, so I'm encouraged a little now! :) We didn't get a catnap though, so I did EBT at 6:30, hopefully he has a good night.

That is awesome!  Keep us posted!

So jealous of the patio construction, DH and I were just talking about ours but we have decided to wait until next summer as we have to do some work to the outside of our house as well so decided to wait until I was back at work and we have a little more funds to be able to do the work!  I love patios and just being outside in the summer!!

My lo has suddenly started to be a bit more consistent too, with a 2hr 30 a time, giving 3 sleeps totalling 3.5 hours over the day (2 or 3 naps) and last night sleeping through the night from 11.30 until 7.30....

So I look forward to teething, rolling, crawling or whatever the next 'ing' is to throw it all out of sink again!

2h40 again this morning first A time, I put in his room because it seemed like the noisy stuff was done with outside, nope 5minutes later they started something it was so loud it was unbearable... well he slept through it all, for 1h30! he had his white noise, which I did put louder than usual but that's still something! :)

but for his second A, he looked so tired, I ended up putting him down at 2h25. this morning he woke up for the day at 5:30 which is unusual for him so probably that's why he's a little more tired than usual.

wow Cheryl, that is fantastic! :)

We have the same issues over here too.  DS has been at 2hrs 45 mins for the past week as 2hrs 30 mins was all of a sudden getting us only 45 min naps.  Now, I think he needs another stretch in A time which is unbelievable to me because he's only 5 1/2 months, but this morning he did 1hr 15 min morning nap and I can't figure out if it's OT or UT.  Woke grumpy so I'm thinking OT, but he did the same amount of A time yesterday and slept 2hrs 30 mins.   There are NO tired signs ever!  Grrrr....

There is no chance of nap extension here anymore either.  Starting refusing his paci two weeks ago and just won't take it anymore.  Cries hysterically when I try to rock him or soothe him back to sleep.  I'm worried my neighbours will call child services on me so I have no choice except to get him up.  Of course, he's super happy as soon as he's out of his room.

Someone tell me this will be over soon....

BTW, Elise I remember when my DD was a baby, we had our furnace replaced one evening when she was sleeping.  It was soooo loud, banging, welding, drilling, etc.  She slept right through it.  She also slept through the fire alarm going off in the middle of the night, the Angel Care monitor going off and the chain sawing every afternoon when the guy next door would cut his lumber for firewood. She's now 4 1/2 and the other day DH wanted to wake her up from her afternoon nap so he went in to her room and vacuumed it while she was sleeping.  She slept through it!!!  Of course, this is the daughter of a man who could sleep through a hurricane and not wake up.  ;)

So good news. Naps are better for the last few days. Yesterday he did 2h50 for his first A time  :o and slept 1h40, then 2h20 for the second A and slept 1h20.  He woke at 3:25 from his second nap so no CN, EBT at 6:25. He slept (with 2 NF's and 1 NW  ::)) until 6:45 this morning (I was so afraid EBT would mean EW).

This morning I slept in so he was with DH and DD, I think they exhausted him because at 2h35 he could not take it anymore so I put him down. We'll see what kind of nap that brings I guess :P

He seems to want a longer A for the first nap, but he's not yet ready to do such a long A for the 2nd A, or maybe he needs that first nap to be a bit longer to be fully refreshed? I guess we'll see how it goes for the next couple of days. The patio is done so there shouldn't be too much disrupting of his sleep now  (and if we have good weather, I can enjoy it while he sleeps  ;D)

That's good news Elise. I guess you've figured out his first A time so a good start.  My DS also seems to tolerate a long first A time as well much more so than the one following the morning nap.  He's always grumpy and gets OT easily for the PM nap.

Same here. He handles a super long A in the AM, and wakes happy - he chats in his crib for a good 20 minutes on and off before he even escalates just a little and then I go see him. In the PM, he handles a much shorter A and wakes grumpy from his nap. I'm not sure how to handle this. Reduce the second A?

I've tried reducing but he will either take ages to fall asleep, cry hard or do a 35 min nap with no chance of extending.  Yesterday DH didn't get him to sleep until 3hrs 5mins of A time for the PM nap and he slept for 2hrs, so maybe he just needs more A time even though he's grumpy.  I really don't know.  I'm trying for 3hrs today.  We'll see how that goes.

Interesting Jennifer... how long is his A in the AM? Keep me posted on how the 3h goes!
