So DS did great on sweet potato for 5 days and we introduced butternut squash yesterday. I'm not sure if I should stop it... he had a loose stool yesterday PM (he usually poops once a day in the AM) and then again this AM.  Yesterday he drank fantastically well (has been drinking his formula great since we added the Zantac) but today it takes all of my energy to get him to take 5 oz. He's fussy and cries a lot.

Would you stop it or continue the squash? should i continue with the sweet potato or is it potentially a build up in his system?

Any teething?

Don't think so

Was the poop acidic or cause a rash?

It didn't cause a rash, but both times I got it quickly right after it was done

He was he?

???

Appear uncomfortable, gassy etc or ok?

He's fussy today, but not gassier than usual

Hmmmm... so I stopped squash, didn't give any solids yesterday (didn't have time, week-ends are crazy with DD around), he had normal poops.  Today I gave him sweet potato and he had another liquidy mucousy poop before BT.  Not sure what to do... he's super happy, drinking well... is that just his body adjusting to solid food and I should keep it up for a little bit? He'll be 6 months in 10 days so it's not like it's ages before he gets there, I can't just keep on introducing and then stopping all the time.  WDYT?

It could well be this. :-\ Ill ask for some more eyes .. actually. Do you want to post it on the FSF board? I think you will get some better eyes there. It doesnt sound like its causing a reflux flare, but maybe something else is at play...

Thanks Sara :). I was actually not sure where to post, and I started a post here before deleting it and going back to the CRC post - didn't want to have too many posts going around on the same subject ;).

I agree it doesn't sound like a reflux flare up, and not even allergies / intolerances (he's MSPI) because he doesn't have a rash. When we tried rice cereal with soy in them, he had a huge rash + some diarrhea, and he was cranky.  Right now he's the happiest he's even been :D so I'm thinking of keeping it up, maybe not adding any new food so sticking to squash and sweet potato for a few days.

I wanted to try probiotics but the pharmacist said no because he's too young and the paed said no it won't do anything for him ???

Interesting. My Dr was quite supportive of it, and it is discussed on the cryingoverspiltmilk gastric reflux accn of NZ site. http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/alternativetherapies/probiotics/ They are not mainstream medicine, but complimentary though so it makes sense for some Drs to be skeptical.

Given that he seems happy my guess is he's okay without them ATM anyway. they worked wonders for Z but he had tummy trouble and has been on reflux meds a long time now really.

So again he had a liquidy, horrible-smelling poop... Although he's still fine, I'm kinda worried - he is fussier than usual and spitting up loads today - feeds are not as smooth as they've been lately. Wondering what to do... I would go to the paed but I'm pretty sure they'll dismiss it. Going for a follow up on Monday so maybe until then I'll keep going with only these 2 foods and see how it goes. I do make my own purees so really there is nothing else than the veg and cooled boiled water.

If he is getting liquid poos then I would be inclined to stop those 2 foods and see if it clears up!

Thank you both. I've stopped both and we'll see how it goes.  The problem seemed to start when we introduced squash but I'm wondering if it's really just squash of the buildup from sweet potato because when I tried sweet potato again (after having introduced squash) I got the liquid poops again. But maybe his system is still recovering from the squash ??? I'll wait until he is fully recovered and then try the sweet potato again I guess.

amandacan what did you do? did you introduce a new food every week or waited until she could tolerate one before introducing another one? I waited 5 days before I introduced a new food but next time I'll definitely wait at least a week!

I'm afraid I can't be any help, but would love to know how you get on.

I tried to wean DS2 who has reflux at 19 weeks on baby rice. We had explosive and runny mucus poo for 2 days, like you I changed straight away so don't know if it would have caused rash. I perceviered for another 2 days, the diarhea did stop then, but he was just so uncomfortable, don't know if it was beginning to make him constipated. I then stopped. I was thinking of trying again at 23 weeks, but just trying to collect as much advice as I can before I try again.

hun have you considered probiotics? They can help keep the flora in the gut balanced. We never knew about them till later but were a god send for my LO - In 2 weeks I noticed a huge change in his tummy troubles, in that they went...that said we don't have intolerance's as such here, just a sensitive gut.

Some very very safe foods are pear - riper the better, pumpkin/squash and sweet potato. Try to avoid rice if you can to start with itcan be hard to digest. ;)

Elise will have some good tips for you hopefully as she is going through it all ATM :-*

Unfortunately I don't have much good to report :(  the allergist diagnosed my DS with FPIES last week, which triggers allergic reactions to lots of foods. so he's reacted so far to everything he's tried, we're going to try apples but now he's teething so I'm waiting until he's better to introduce a new food.

I would definitely try to start again with something else, pear seems to be a favorite for reflux babies. Then try cereal maybe a bit later because as Sara says, they can be difficult to digest for LO's.

Agree also with the probiotics, we are now using them and it seems to have improved his digestion!

HTH :)

Thank you. Will definitely try the pear. Wondering about the probiotics, I'm in Britain, not sure what I'd give. Do you get them prescribed, or is it just the same as an adult would have. What age can they have them.

Hmmm not sure about what to get in Britain, maybe someone else will pop in, we use BioGaia, it's drops and it's for babies, I asked my pharmacist and she had them behind the counter.  I think there is no age to give probiotics, but you may want to check with your pharmacist.
