Just wanted to pop on and offer some support too

I notice that he woke crying within a couple hours of being fed each time.  Do you think his reflux is well controlled?
I'm wondering this also. If his reflux isn't 100% controlled then you won't have any success with sleep training. He simply won't be able to stay asleep either. What meds is he on? Has he had a growth spurt lately?

Quote from: becj86 on Yesterday at 01:47:53 AMI think you may need to think of him as a 4-5 week old baby in terms of him getting used to the home environment - his whole world has changed a lot.Just wanted to start by saying I totally agree with this.  He's got so, so much going on, I think you'll have to be pretty patient and remember that it's like starting over with the sleep training stuff.
I agree with this too. And forgive me as my knowledge of Down's Syndrome is very limited but considering this as well as just getting him home and the surgery I wonder if you need to actually treat him more like a newborn?

If you don't feel like you can do it for that nap, then use the car seat or swing or a carrier.  It'll be a good break for you both.
And this. I'm a huge fan of APOP when it's needed. To get out of OT cycles, illness, teething and uncontrolled reflux are great times to use it. It can work wonders for your sanity and give you the chance to mentally regroup and go back at it with both you and your lo fresh.

Many hugs hun.

I totally agree - you guys are right. I'm not sure if its the reflux. He's on rinitidine. I will mention it to his paed in case though.

Its funny - last night he slept all the way until 3 am. He woke several times but put himself back to sleep each time. The difference? I didn't swaddle him. He can find his thumb so perhaps he prefers it this way?! Hoping tonight goes well...

The thumb is a great thing (at least it has been for my DS)! :) Fingers crossed for another good night.

Good that he can settle himself. I'd ditch the swaddle and cross fingers for another good night ;) You can always go back to swaddling later if you really have to but if he's soothing himself with his thumb, it would probably be counterproductive.

Unfortunately no luck last night. BUT his routine was all wonky during the day because of hospital visits and he didn't eat enough. So he was up at 9, 1030, 12 and 130 wanting to eat! Very frustrating...

My dd1 was/is a thumb sucker, such a good thing.  Might you try swaddling with1 arm out?

I've actually not swaddled him at all for the past few nights and all his naps and he's slept so much better. I can definitely tell he prefers it.

So glad you're finding how he prefers to sleep. It makes a world of difference :)

How's he sleeping now? Is he starting to settle into a routine more now?

Hey there. He actually is and doing much better (fingers crossed). Last night he woke up at 2 and 5 to eat annd then up for the day at 7. I can't really complain much about that. I am sure our sleep troubles are far from over but for now I will enjoy the moment. Thanks so much for your help!
