DS is having a slew of tests and I need a hug!
« on: June 12, 2012, 19:18:55 pm »
We went to a pediatric GI specialist today for DS's unidentified GI issues.  They are testing him for Celiac, milk allergy, parasites, some colon health marker, CBC, etc.  Hoping we can avoid him being scoped.  He has lost at least 1 lb. so now he is at the same weight he was at 12mo (he is 17mo now).  I am so torn up about this.   :'(

(((HUGS)))

What are his symptoms?

(((HUGS))) I get what you mean about being torn up... you want him to feel better, but it would be nice if he didn't have to go through all that...  :(

thanks, ladies.  it is so hard!

he caught a bad GI bug 3 months ago and never really recovered.  diarrhea on and off, complete dairy intolerance (even lactose free dairy products), patch of eczema that won't go away, and now losing weight.  he is on a fructose elimination diet to try to control the loose stool.  he was incredibly grumpy before his ED but that has helped keep his spirits up, but not his weight and his stool is still soft.  :(

Poor boy and poor mommy!!!  Any chance to see an allergist?  There is lactose intolerance and Milk Protein intolerance.  Do you keep a food journal for him?  This will really help you to see what causes reactions.  hugs!!

i kept a food journal for a week for the nutritionist, who reviewed it and put us on a low fructose ED.  keeping that journal is hard work!  a bite here, a bite there...i should probably do it again once we start reintroducing again.  i am talking with the nutritionist today about reintroducing so i can have a plan.

he has been dairy/gluten/soy free, in addition to other high-fructose items, for 2.5 weeks...except 3 days ago i was desperate to feed him, he was refusing everything, and we were out, so i got a panini at Starbucks and let him have 3 small bites of bread and gave him chicken with a little bit of cheese on it, and yup, horribly loose stools the next day.  :(  the next day i kept to his ED and the day after that (1st day of stool collection) he had the best stools he has had in months.  yesterday i gave him lactose-free yogurt (part of our original reintroduction plan) so we will see what his diapers offers me today.  LOL.

yes, i can take him to an allergist if i choose to.  i am waiting to hear on the results of the blood/stool tests...and the GI did offer that food allergy diagnosis in kids is really tricky but she seems to suspect dairy since he could not even handle lactose free milk products before his ED.

It is a pain but once you get into it, it will be easy.  Or perhaps not offer too many different things in a day, it will also make it easier to do the detective work!  I do one for myself, so i also keep one for DS as allergies can be hereditary.

All the vibes for the investigation.

thanks again.  i should probably restart the journal.  we added in gluten back to the diet per the ped GI, and the first two days he has great poops...and now they are awful.  i am dialing back how much gluten he is getting and enforcing the small amounts of low-fructose veggies.  he is still dairy and soy free, too.

waiting to hear the results of all of these tests is nervewracking!  i should find out by the end of the week.

well, all of the tests results thus far (bloods and stool) came back normal.  the GI is going to set up a plan for reintroducing dairy/soy/additional fructose (we are doing wheat 2x a day).  i am not sure what the next steps are at the moment but i am relieved and perplexed at the same time...

hi!  sorry for the delay in responding, we were traveling a lot the past month.

the wheat has been going well (thank goodness...gluten free is MUCH harder than dairy free since my DS will not touch any gluten alternative food).  we tried to reintroduce dairy and of course he ended up with diarrhea within 10 days.   :-\  we did some further stool testing (absorption) and those all came back normal.  the nutritionist wants us to wait 6 months and try again to introduce dairy at 2yo.  so we are currently back to dairy/soy-free living.

i think that if, at 2yo, DS still cannot eat dairy we may go to an allergist for formal testing.  is that something worth doing?  do they do skin tests for food allergies that manifest as GI issues?  how does that work?

thanks again for checking in!  how is life with you?

Yay for the wheat! That is a big step!

Not sure on the skin tests TBH. I would say probably not as they would be for fast acting allergies and a GI response is more of a slow acting? You see the reactions of a skin test almost immediately.
