Successful bedtime routine goes awry for 14 month old
« on: June 19, 2012, 19:10:47 pm »
My 14 month old dd is a great sleeper. We very successfully used EASY when she was quite little, and for her first year, had a standard routine that involved playing a specific song while we changed her diaper and her clothes, then we read 2-3 books, and we sing her a song. We used the same routine for bedtime and for naps, and after the lullabye, we would leave her room as she was putting herself to sleep.

All the sudden, when she turned 1, she wanted us to stay with her while she fell asleep in her crib. At first, I thought it was just a phase, but here we are 2.5 months later, and instead of 10-15 minutes at bedtime, it takes 30-60 minutes. She is starting to want the same thing at nap time too (we are down to 1 nap). I don't mind staying with her- she is in her crib and really justs wants myself or her dad in her room, so we sit next to the crib while she falls asleep- now, but I am worried she will always want someone in with her while she falls asleep, even as she gets to be a bigger kid.

We worked very hard to get her to fall asleep on her own when she was really tiny. Should I be worried that we are setting ourselves up for bedtime troubles down the road? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hugs, we hada similar thing around 12-14 months. I think it is partially developmental in that they go through so many changes at this age. Do you feel SA may be at play?

can you post a typical day? Sometimes mucking around at BT is A result of UT

You may need to do some sleep training ... She sounds similar to what Z did. W had todo WI/WO as GW stopped working and Wended up OS him

SA might be at play, but she has always been really independent.

A typical day for us is wake-up 7/7:30a
8:00a Eat breakfast
Activity time- we usually try to get out of the house
11:30a Lunchtime
12-2p Naptime
Activity time- we have a snack in there sometime between 3-4, again try to get out of the house and find something where
DD can burn off some energy
5:30/6- Dinner
8:00 Bedtime (bedtime used to be at 7:30, but the summer daylight seems to have affected that- she won't go to sleep until 8:30, sometimes 8:45, though we still shoot for 8:00).

Trying to find a good explanation of WI/WO. Also, I wake her at 2 hrs from her nap, and sometimes in the morning to make sure she will go to sleep no later than she already is. Any additional advice would be great!!

I wonder if she might be a bit ot with her bedtime creeping later - mine were on a 11.5-12h day at that age, whereas it would seem that your lo is nearer a 13h day. When mine were napping 12-2, bedtime was at 6.30 and they were asleep soon after - could you pull bedtime back to nearer 7 to see if that helps?

I was thinking the same thing... :-\ We had a bit of this for a while but had long chatting at BT. I thought UT but it was actually OT and after 3-5 days of earlier BT by 15-30 mins things came right.

Here is some info on WI/WO

Thank you so much for your advice. I am certainly open to trying an earlier bedtime, but she isn't cranky, and she won't fall asleep in the car or stroller (which she seems to do when she is tired) before bedtime either. When she is really tired, she usually goes right to sleep. Last night for example, we had some friends over for dinner (quite a bit of stimulation) and she was asleep within 15 minutes without needing us to stay with her. We will give it a try though.

When did you go down to one nap? It is possible that that is causing accumulated ot as well - she is young to be on one nap. It might be worth trying to pull her whole day back a bit - so nap at 11.30 for 2 hours and then bt a bit earlier too as she could be getting past her sleepy window and getting a second wind. If she generally copes well with ot then it can be quite hard to pinpoint.

What is her personality? Is she touchy at all? Spirited? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52284.0
If she is textbook/angel she may not give sleepy signs other than as clazzat says - that hyper second wind ;)
