Losing suction on bottles
« on: June 20, 2012, 10:14:09 am »
Hello,

My LO is nearly 5 months, and am feeding him formula and BM. I have been using size 2 avent teats and recently found that he has been losing suction and struggling to draw out enough milk. I assumed this was because he was needing a upgrade, so have just tried a size 3 medium flow teat. He lost suction every suck! Does anyone have any thoughts/ suggestions?

Should I keep trying the size 3 and hope that he gets used to it - or go back to size 2?

Many thanks.

Have you tried a variflow teat? I think they work by opening more depending on the amount of suction LO uses. We used them and DD prefered them to any other.

That's a strange one! How often are you feeding him? What was happening to make you think he was loosing suction? Is he teething?

Hi,
He feeds every 3.5 hours normally. He's managing the bottle fine, but can hear clicking sound, and him loosing the latch/suction on the teat. We only starting using new size yesterday so may just be getting used to it. My husband said that he was fine on it last night for BT feed so see how it goes today.

I'll have a look out for different teats that may help with the flow.

Thanks for your help, Wendy

Has the issue only happened since changing teats or did you change because of the loosing suction? Does he have a tongue tie at all - that can cause clicking when sucking?

Can you change to a different shaped teat? Perhaps a narrow base- or i think the pigeon brand teat fit into the avent... it might help to have a different shape?
