When do you start to shh/pat?
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:11:28 am »
Hi there, just a quick question, I have a 4 week old and we are slowly introducing EASY, I am just making sure we do EAS at the mo and am promoting independent sleep. I have a 2 yr old as well so the independent sleep is a must for us. I know he is still too young to do it on his own, but he is doing really well. I have a question though, I swaddle him when he 1st yawns, we have a cuddle and I pop him into his cot awake. He is quite happy there for a while so I leave him. When he cries I will go in and start to shh/pat, is this right, should I shh/pat from the beginning? I know how quickly they can get OT so I am thinking by the time I am starting shh/pat he is OT....IYKWIM?? But then I think if he is happy I should leave him to it....
Any advice would be great, thank you x

I tried shush/pat as soon as I put DS in the cot to try to help him learn to settle and it resulted in both of us crying :(
If I had my time again, I'd leave the sleep training for 3.5-4 months and take what I could get sleep-wise til then. Sticking to the EAS order of things is great and will help LO stay rested and get used to the routine.

I think if he is happy I should leave him to it....
If you're going to do either, I'd stick with this approach from my experience of one child.

Ok i think i'm doing ok. I'm mostly trying to stick 2 the EAS order & trying 2 get him to sleep in his cot but if he doesnt or cant i wont sweat it. Today he ended up sleeping 2 of his naps in the sling due to nursery pick ups & drop offs. For a very young bub he is doing well - better than my dd1. Just dont want to get into AP but maybe need to chill a bit. My hubbie thinks so anyway....

Sounds like a plan!! In some ways too they aren't ready for proper independant 'sleep training' till closer to 3 months/4 months- and you have the tools in shh-pat to teach it- so even ifyou wait till then and then hit it hard then you are all good!
