19 month old ... great sleeper turned awful
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:06:31 am »
Hi there,
We followed EASY from Day 1 and never had any problems with DD. She always went down at 7pm and was happy to put herself to sleep. It didn't matter if DH or ! put her down or even an aunt or uncle. But at 16 months, DH had to go away for 2 weeks and ever since then she gets really upset at bed time. She will only fall asleep in our arms & roars her head off if we put her in her cot before she's asleep. PU/PD doesn't work as she stops crying as soon as we PU so we put her down immediately but then she's roaring hysterically again. This can go on for 3 hours until she's so exhausted that she goes asleep. But even then she has one eye open to make sure we haven't left her. We've tried just stepping out of the room but making noise so she knows we're still there, etc but nothing works except a cuddle & falling asleep in our arms. Can anyone help as the baby whisperer book that I have does;t explain what to do with uncontrollable crying at bed time. We have a routine that has always been the same so we just don't know what to do next...

Hi there.  Sorry to hear you are having a rough time.

Can you post your full routine (wakeup time, nap time & length & bedtime including time put into bed & time eventually asleep)?

We had some issues with DS not settling at bedtime at this age & it turned out he needed an increase in A times, so it may well be that its a routine issue that's causing her to resist BT.  In my experience DS will often put up the most resistance when he simply isn't tired enough to sleep.

Also around 18 months is a huge sleep regression & SA can peak so it could be she is experiencing this too.
