My DS wants to sleep all day...
« on: June 29, 2012, 23:05:54 pm »
My DS is 7 weeks old and we were on day 9 today of starting the routine but the last two days has been a disaster... He was getting used to having his naps in his bassinet and we were trying the routine and doing fairly well with it. Now for the last two day all he wants to do is sleep and it is sleep in our arms only! If he is anywhere else he will only sleep for a few minutes then he wakes up crying
. If he is not sleeping in our arms he is crying!!! What do I do!!!! I am exhausted cause I am not able to nap at all during the day. And I am not able to nor do I want him to get used to sleeping all his naps in our arms. Please help!!!

Do you swaddle?  I found that both my boys needed a tight swaddle at that age to feel secure.

Thanks for getting back to me! Yes we do swaddle, and he slept very well at night with it on. Naps in the other hand are another story...he will go down ok then the hard part is keeping him asleep for more than 20 mins...
I don't think he is coming down with anything...
So it has been hard to write down his full day due to his random sleep in our arms for those two day.

E-7:40
A-1.5 hours
S-30 mins
E-9:45
A-1 hour
S- 50 mins but woke up 3 times
E-11:45
A-5mins
S- not actual time due to only wanting to sleep in our arms almost for the rest of the day on and off
A- bath @6 pm
S- 7pm

Next day

E- 6:35
A- 1 hour
S- 1hour also very interrupted
E-8:30
A-1 hour
S-40 min interrupted
E-10:35
A-1 hour
S-1 hour
E-12:30
A-15min
S-2hours 40mins in my DH arms on and off...
E-3:15
A- lost tract of routine....
S- 6pm took 3hours for him to finally get to sleep

Through the night he normally wakes up at 1am and 4am and 6 am for a feeding. I am struggling his morning feeds lasting longer than 2 hours...I am very tired!!

His daily activity involves snuggles, songs, floor time, bouncy chair and his music swing.
In the last 30 hours or less he has not had a bowel movement which is odd. He normally has 3-4 bowel movements per day.
Also do all of his naps at this age need to be taken in his bassinet???
Before the last few days feed durring the day were lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours..now I feel I am feeding every 2 hours...maybe a growth spurt??

Yes, I wondered this too. There's usually a BIG one around 6 weeks, but it can be a bit earlier or later. If it is a growth spurt, things should start to calm down in a few days.

No, he's still very young :) I would aim for 1-2 naps per day in the bassinette and not worry too much about the rest- especially if you're really struggling with him not sleeping well. Pop him in the stroller or sling and get out for a walk so you get some fresh air, or snuggle up on the sofa together :)

Thank you so much! Very reasurring knowing all naps don't need to be in his bassinet! Just as long as he naps! we had a better day yesterday with getting naps in. we are going out of town for 10 days andi am worried cause I feel like the routine will be thrown off...if it does is it hard to get back into it?

At this age I would say it won't make much difference. If you can, try to maintain your EAS order of things, and get him to nap when he needs to (in sling, stroller etc, that's fine) so he doesn't get too OT. Otherwise just relax and go with the flow ;) He's too young to really be forming habits yet so you can just pick up where you left off when you get home :)

Ok great! At what age do children really start forming habits?
Also now we are kinda having the opposite problem...our LO does not really want to nap for more than 15 mins no matter where he is...omg he gets so OT his little eyes go red around the eye lids! Breaks my heart cause we try so hard to give him ample chances to nap anywhere...lol what do I do with an OT baby!?!?!

APOP! How long is he awake for? He still shouldn't be awake for much more than an hour between naps.

Do you think it could be discomfort causing him to wake so frequently? Gassiness, or reflux? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

As for forming habits, some things I've read say 8 weeks, others say 3 months... but you are already starting well I think with having a routine, reading cues, not feeding to sleep every time, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about actual sleep training and independent sleep until 3 months.

he normally is happy after he feeds for no more than an hour then at the sign of a first yawn we start our routine to get him ready for a nap...and he wants to sleep but he fights it. So much that he keeps himself awake or nap for 20 mins then wakes and does that for over an hour...never sleeps through. I will ask my doctor about reflux, but he is gassy...i suppose...still struggles to pass gas and now seems to be pooping every other day..not his normal 3-4 times per day. Sometimes he gets angry while feeding but I think it is from my over active let-down...
