Jolts grrrhh!!Help
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:43:12 am »
Hi all,
My DS2 is 6 wks old we are trying to follow EAS, but it aint easy! Considering his age I think we are doing well. I am having some difficulty with some naps.
He is waking at the jolts, is there any way i can tackle this. Is this normally due to OT/OS, I defo think he was OT this morning when it happened, he was difficult to settle. I am writing our day down today so should be able to provide that info later. Although its my birthday and I know its all gonna go out the window with family visiting.
I also have a 2.5yr old so staying with him for the full 20 mins is hard....
Any advice on what causes them to wake fully at the jolts would be great, thank you

Hi, congratulations on DS2!  Not an expert by any means but have you tried holding through the jolts (HTTJ)?  I've had success a few times with it although never did it consistently.  Basically you observe at what point in the nap the jolt is likely to happen (e.g. at 20 mins) and then a few mins before you go and hold them around the top of the chest/arms to stop them jolting so much, you can also pat/shh if needed to get them back to sleep and then stay until they're back in a deep sleep.  Appreciate this might be hard with a 2.5yo though....  Do you swaddle?  Might help with reducing the jolting a bit?  From everything I've read on here the jolts are a normal part of development though so it may be a case of just riding it out  :-\  Hope that helps and things get easier for you soon x

Thanks for the reply...I do swaddle and I have been able to get him through a few times with holding or shh/pat. But then 20 mins later he will do the same, at this point I give up. Grrh! I feel like I am going round in circles and am probably doing way more AP'ing then I should.
I guess if its developmental I may well have to ride it out. If he is too OT in the afternoons/eve I pop him in the sling so he can get some sleep. But I feel like we are entering bad habit territory.
It is so hard with a 2.5 yr old because she needs my time as well...I wish I could relax a bit more and go with the flow.

hi hun, I wouldn't worry too much about introducing bad habits at this stage, he is still so young :) At his age I would aim for one nap a day in the cot and if the others are in the sling, stroller etc that's absolutely fine. Especially with a toddler around, I'm sure you still have to get out and do things!

How long is he awake for? A times at this age are still very short, about an hour. If he's awake much longer than that he might be going down OT, which will make it harder for him to settle. http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64158.0

Hugs.
