sleeping with paci
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:42:33 am »
Hi ladies,

My dd2 is 5 weeks old :) I BW my dd1 and want to BW dd2 also.
We are on a flexible 3 hrous routine and EASY.

Tracy suggests and encourages the pacifier for newborns to settle to sleep and I have been using it along with light pat/shush.
I lay her drowsy in her crib and she goes to sleep easily,  she has just started happinly taking the paci, before that she didnt and we had a lot of crying ...and the only thing that soothed her was the breast...

when I first put her in her crib (and after winding her down with the paci) and if the paci falls off, she can manage to fall back asleep by herself with some shuh/patt without paci sometimes but sometimes she starts crying so I put the paci back.
and since she is learning still to sleep, she wakes at the 10mins, 20 or 30 mins and 45mins and I m extending her naps by putting back the pacifier and shushing a bit...

at night she wakes twice btw 2-3am and 4-5 am for a feed... she is usually very sleepy for NWs and cant wake her up unless she needs a diaper change...

with dd1, she started the thumb sucking by 3 months of age so it gave us 3 years of good sleep- ofcourse soon we have to wean her from it...

so I know i m taking the easy way with the paci right? can you please help me tweak the use of the paci so it doesnt become a prop!!!!!!

THANK YOU!
so am i going to regret the paci?

Hi there

Your little one is so young, that I wouldn't worry about it. Really-do what you need to do right now to get some sleep and worry about it later *if* it even becomes a problem. :)

My 12 week old has been waking a lot lately and only settles with the paci.  My 2 others have had the paci too and I don't really remember if they did this or not

Hi ladies,

I have noticed with proper winding down time and very minimal stimulation dd2 can actually dose off without a paci! Only with some patting while covering her eyes! :)
Which is great, we r still using the paci when and if a cry escalates to soothe as I cannot handle anymore crying ( we had a lot of it before she started using it!!!).

I still have a question though; what do you when u know its time to sleep and she suddenly opens her eyes wiiiiiide open!
When this happens and if I put the paci on, she automatically doses off again... Shud I just shush again... This can take ages! For she can close and shut them a multiple of times....

Thanks for your advise :) X

I'd just give her the paci. My DS just stopped being interested in the paci at 7mo. If it becomes a prop you can wean it then. If she has the paci and spits it out don't replug it unles she cries for it. Needless replugging is what often leads to it becoming a prop.
If it makes you feel any better SIDS recs are to use a dummy to settle to sleep .

Hi and thanks,

I guess over using it and replugging or even plugging very soon and very quickly and for any reason makes the paci a prop....I'm trying to avoid the pb that lori is facing now...
It's so easy to use the paci...I guess if I try to avoid using as a "quick fix" , we should not have a pb... Right?
Thanks

I have to agree with what is said above. My LO is now 6 months and has a paci for falling asleep. Over the last week or so she is spitting it out more and more. I got very stressed when she was younger worrying about creating a prop issue but really if you are sensible, listen to your LO and don't quick fix it like you say I'm sure things will be fine. :)

Thanks, so far I'm only using it for naps, at night she doesn't need it for some reason...my main pb is when she wakes after napping shortly...this is when I'm "replugging" it ,to extend the nap... It seems the only thing that works and the easier thing to do... My presence seems to stimulate her, she would look at me and starts smiling! Lol.. Even after 30mins of sleep..so should I just replug?...thx

Chris,  I have used the paci to replug to extend naps for my 2 older children.  Eventually they either learn to do it on their own or just sleep through the jolts and don't need it.  The shhh pat really stimulates my little one too...once he knows I'm there, he doesn't want to sleep anymore :)

Yes I think a replug to extend naps is fine. Better that than you have to intervene for ages or you have to get her up.

Again I agree with what has been said. My LO has been a terrible napper and we constantly had to extend, always with the paci. She is now 6 months and finally having much more regular 1.5 hour naps with no need for paci.

I think it great that your LO doesn't need it at night, already a step in the weaning process! :D
