always starving - need more ideas for healthy snacks
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:13:58 pm »
H is constantly hungry atm. He is always asking for food which is fine but I am running out of ideas and today we have strayed into having biscuits and a small chocolate lolly. Now I am kind of ok with that as a one off but I don't want it to be a regular thing. I just run out of ideas. He eats a lot of fruit or food with fruit in so smoothies, dried fruit, fruit bars, bananas, raspberries but there is a limit to how much I want him to have. We do cereal bars, make banana bread, bread and peanut butter....he won't go for anything like veg and dips, I have tried that countless times.

So - any ideas? He is always asking me for food and it is getting a bit tiring particularly as I have to be careful as he is pretty picky so too many snacks and meals are hard work but I do think he is genuinely hungry.

thanks x

I often make muffins for my constantly hungry girl...I make pumpkin/apple  and banana cinnamon...she loves her muffins. I make the regular size and also I make the miniatures. I pop them in the freezer so there are always a few on hand! I use whole what flour, and toss some ground flaxseed in there too...they are really very wholesome.

Is he eating at melatime? Finishing his breakfast? Maybe increase his portions at mealtime...?

L has cubes of (different kind of) cheese some times which def helps fill her up.

Also, rice/corn cakes, bread sticks...

Not that inspiring I know but different to fruit.

I have made diluted fruit juice lollies in molds in the freezer too which she likes (but is fruit again).

There were some great ideas in this thread for snacks the other week:

thanks both of you.

well he will eat a lot if it is a meal he likes but he is pretty fussy tbh. I do try to limit snacks about an hour before tea but we do get quite a bit of 'uggh, I don't like that' going on. Muffins are a great idea - where do you get your recipes from Anne?

Good fats. Good calorie source, crucial for growing LOs especially brains and nerves, and leaves you feeling full longer. Current fave snack here is homemade popsicles made from equal parts coconut milk and yogurt with protein powder and extra coconut oil added while the blender is running, plus fish oil and fruit in season. Super filling and nutritious too. :)

wow they sound great - I must get some coconut oil. He has a fish oil so I could add it to that.

My banana cinnamon recipe is from my sister...I'm happy to share if you'd like.  The apple pumpkin I googled one day after dd had an apple pumpkin muffin at a bakery and fell in love! I just googled and printed it...there are a ton out there!  I will bbl and post mine later, as I am too lazy to go downstairs and get them.   :-[   :P

Does he like flapjack?

I have a recipe for 'savoury' flapjack somewhere - it was posted on here somewhere many moons ago! It's not the healthiest of snacks I suppose but it's not bad - the recipe is for a cheese based one but you can add grated veggies in there too - I've made it with courgette, carrot, etc.
