soya and boys sex hormones??!
« on: August 02, 2012, 13:21:19 pm »
Someone alerted me to this and I have had a quick look online and tbh am a bit panicked now...it seems soya can have a negative effect on boy's sex hormones.

Henry does not have an allergy but a possible intolerance to dairy and has been off it for about 7 weeks now. We have replaced milk with almond milk but he does have a soya yoghurt most days and once or twice a week a soya custard.

Just wondering what others think or know about it.

Thanks

Interested too.

DS has been on soya milk for a long time (about 2yrs now). I put him on it myself as I was getting no help whatsoever from the GP when I suspected a cow's milk intolerance. When the HV found out he was on it several months later she did say that GPs dont like it, but that if it suits DS I should stick with it and go with my 'mummy instinct'. She didnt give any reasons why the GPs dont like it, certainly didnt mention anything like this, and didnt seem to think there was a problem with him staying on it.

We're avoiding soya with our MPI DS, as I react badly to soya (he gets the MPI from DH).

DH is fine on soya, but he didn't start eating it until the grand old age of 39  ;)

This says it's not a worry http://www.babycenter.com/404_ive-heard-that-soy-milk-contains-hormones-are-they-safe-for_1200462.bc

This one raises the issue, but it doesnt sound too concerning http://www.livestrong.com/article/495349-is-soy-milk-safe-for-boys-to-drink/

This one says it's not an issue http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/soy_and_kids.htm

This one says that soya milk is good in 'moderate amounts', but what do they call moderate? http://www.whattoexpect.com/toddler-nutrition/soy-milk-for-children.aspx

i had talked to our ped nutritionist (in the U.S.) about this and she said that based on current research, she does not worry about estrogenic effects of soy unless a child is consuming more than 25g of soy protein a day.  on the flip side, our ped would have been fine if we had given our DS soy milk all day every day.

just goes to show this can be clear as mud!   ::)

more than 25g of soy protein a day
What would that equate to? DS generally only has a cup of soya milk at BT, and some on his cereal on odd days.

you would have to look on the package and see how much protein is in a serving of soy milk and calculate it out depending on how much DS drinks.

This is reason we opted not to use soy with our dairy intolerant kids.  We've preferred hemp milk (which is expensive) or coconut milk (more reasonably priced).  Both of those also have a better natural nutrient profile IMO than soy.

definitely agree with this ^, we have yet to find a yogurt alternative that DS likes.  Ricera is absolutely disgusting, and the almond yogurt is tolerable but only for a couple of bites.  DS is soy free so that is a no go, too.

for DS's milk i buy a mix of rice, almond, hemp, and oat milks and combine together 2 of them at a time.  i am a HUGE fan of hemp milk but it does get pricey.  my DS can't do coconut milk due to its laxative nature but he loved that too.

I've just bought almond milk so will see what DS thinks of that. Yogurt isnt an issue here, luckily.

Don't know what I think of the reading I've done re soya milk tbh, but if he's fine with almond milk then I will switch to that rather than risk any effects from the soya.

What about making your own yoghurt, Becky? You can use any type of milk and it's much less trouble than you would think. I make it with coconut milk for F.
