3.5 month old not interested in feeding
« on: August 07, 2012, 16:08:45 pm »
My 3.5 month old is really disinterested in feeding. Today since 7am to 5pm she's barely had 12oz. She plays with the bottle or pushes it away. She is gaining weight so must be having enough for her but nowhere near what she should have. She takes upto 2hrs to take her bottle. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

What EASY do you have her on? Many formula fed babies need to stretch to 3.5 or 4 hours between feeds by now as formula takes longer to digest than breast milk. Have you switched to a faster flow teat too?

Also if you are letting feeds go on for 2 hours that's probably part of the problem. A bottle feed should be finished by about 20 mins as you are encouraging snacking if you are feeding in dribs and drabs. They really don't get a chance to get properly hungry so they don't take proper feeds and the cycle continues.

You could start afresh in the morning, give her her first feed, let her take as much as she will and then stop the feed. Keep an eye on the time and stretch her as long as you can before you feed her again and she should take more.

Also don't forget that a bottle feed needs to be discarded by an hour after a baby has started drinking from it as bacteria washes back into the bottle as they drink from it and milk is a wonderful breeding ground!

What do you think?
