Just thoughts....short am/long pm and low sleep needs
« on: August 10, 2012, 14:10:04 pm »
Hi, just thinking rather than wanting to change anything at the moment but interested to know other people's experiences.

DD (7mo) is (I'm almost certain) low sleep needs - she can handle high A times and total sleep in 24h is never more than 14h, most usually 13.5ish.  We rarely get 2 long naps in a day, and the times we do, she struggles to settle for bed.

Anyone who has done short am/long pm naps - how did you go about starting this?  At what age?  Did you do a full A before the morning nap, or intentionally do an UT nap?  How short did you cap the am nap?

Thanks :D

Hi JM

That sounds brave but wouldn't u be better of doing a long am so u have one good nap in the bank and then capping pm nap to make sure she tired enough for BT. I think it may be risky to do short am in case pm goes wrong then you'll have a very OT baby. Wdyt?

Hi JM
An early 2-1 transition would be 9-10 mths, this is when Zstarted the transition, and really it came on quite quickly. He is spirited and high as times, and lowish SN. W see the odd 2-1 starting at 8-9 mths but it's pretty unusual and these Los tend to do a long nightshirt day ie 13 hr nights, 2.5 hr nap IYkWIM.

A short am long pm is common, and depending on the child really decides if you need to push them out and cap, or allow an UT nap as some Los won't take an UT nap (mine grr)

In the FAQs there are some info threads on 2-1 ;) have a nosy. It's a general consensus your
LO needs to able to manage 4.5 hrs A + in order to be ready for 1 nap too.

With my DS I always did short am and long pm nap. If he had a long am nap he just fought the pm nap and more often than not wouldn't take one at all.
