mucous poo in BF baby
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:31:51 am »
I've been off dairy, gluten and most soy (still haven't totally eliminated it but will start today :P) for about 2 weeks.

I guess I know that it can take several weeks to get dairy especially out of the system, but our doc seems to think it's been enough time.

Anyway - he still has mucous in his poop!  Yesterday there was quite a bit too actually!!  Like more than I was used to :-\  When our other daughter needed to be on elecare for a while she had MASSIVE mucous poos - the GI specialist told me it was normal as her intestines healed but I didn't buy it at the time because that stuff also made her vomit all over the place with every feeding.

Anyway - wondering if there was some truth to what he told me - more mucous as the intestines heal?  Doesn't quite make sense but I'm wondering if I need to go on a more restrictive ED.  His reflux has improved dramatically though so I know I'm doing something right!!

(((HUGS))) Maggie. When I stopped BF DD and switched her to Nutramigen AA, it pretty much stopped right away. It could definitely take some time though to get better, I do agree that 2 weeks is enough to see a good improvement, but maybe not enough for her to be completely healed?

If her general state is good now, I'd wait maybe one more week to see? If by then there is not less mucous, then I'd go on a more restrictive ED.

Curious how your baby is doing. I new to this board and saw your posting was almost a mth ago. I was dairy, nut, egg,soy and fish free 20 days before the blood stopped. But her poops are still mucousy and wondering if I am still missing something. My doc told me the same thing as yours did, it takes awhile to heal. But the mucous some days is really bad.    So I was just curious if how long the mucous stayed??

Sorry I never replied to this!  He's now had a FPIES reaction to his very first food, so we definitely still have something going on...  Still gets a bit of mucous poo and is still very grumpy and uncomfortable at nighttime  :'(

Oh no!!!  :'( :'(

So sorry to read this maggie.

What was the food?

BANANA of all things!   ::)  I purposely avoided all of the common FPIES triggers (dairy, rice and other grains, sweet potato, squash, etc) and chose banana and he reacted to it:(

Im seriously wondering if he will end up reacting to everything under the sun.  We saw an allergist this week and we did a skin test (the one that scratches the skin - we're scheduled for the 'patch' test at a later date) and they were all negative.  But today, 2 days later, I noticed some bumps on his back (where they did the test - it was like 20 different foods so wouldn't fit on his arm) and there are clusters of tiny pimply, red bumps in most of the spots where he was tested...  so he has little rows of rashes on his back:(  I have no idea what that means but oh well...

I've read something interesting on FPIES... it was a hypothesis of course, no scientific proof, but the thought was that the common triggers were the new foods that were introduced to babies in general. So that any first food would be a trigger, and a lot of the foods introduced before 1 yo. So that it's not the food that's chosen that is an issue, but rather the fact that their digestive / immune systems are immature. Thought it made a lot of sense.

I'm not sure if you know this group but the BTDT mommas have really helped me out when it comes to FPIES.

hugs to you. how are you feeling about this?
