rash gets better overnight, back again in the morning?
« on: August 25, 2012, 19:21:45 pm »
ok....so i've just seen this thread so i said i'd try here for some BTDT eyes!i've posted already but am so confused!

the past few days LO has had little splotches on her limbs. it seems to improve overnight & then reappears again during the day.we took her to the GP & she is otherwise well-GP reckons it's a reaction to food/formula. ??? ???

here's the story so far!

she started solids 7 weeks ago-following AK's planner, give or take.
EBF for 6 months when i started to swap BFs for BM in a bottle.
Started formula (aptamil stage 1) on the 16th (starting with 1oz & building up to a full feed by the 20th of 6oz)
I was down to 1 BF but Ive reintroduced the morning one today to try & make my frozen stash last a bit longer.

I haven't given her formula since yesterday morning (5oz)....as i said, it improved overnight but within a few hours of waking,it was back again, although not as bad as yesterday.i had thought it must be the formula as this is what happened yesterday morning (after the morning formula feed) but she didn't have formula today & it still happened (although not as bad)

sooooo confused!!!!
any advice?

the only cereal she's had is Plum 4 grain porridge (egg, gluten&dairy free)
veg she's had: butternut squaash, sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, potato, swede, broccoli, courgette, cauliflower, red pepper (i initially thought it may be the pepper because i gave it to her on the 22nd & that was when the rash got noticably bad, but im almost certain it was there before that in the previous day or so but i just hadnt paid it too much attention cause it was just one or two spots)
fruit she's had:pear, apple, papaya , banana, avocado, peach, mango, melon, plum

Are you able to take the formula out of her diet and see if the rash clears up?

Are the splotches like eczema? I guess the doc has ruled out a virus?

Is it perhaps to do with the heat in the day?  The kind of clothes during the day vs night?  Rubbing, or breathable, or it could be something not in the bedroom but in other rooms?

i'm beginning to think she's allergic to the daytime!!!!!! :)
our dogs aren't allowed upstairs....but she's been around them since day 1.
she'd gotten a few more splotches again by the time i was putting her down for her nap...that was while she was still in her babygro....

Ds1 also has chronic idiopathic urticaria, which means hives of unknown origin. Usually it's caused by a virus, and your child may have  no other symptoms other than the splotches. If you're seeing no pattern or reason foor the rash, it migght be this. We drove ourselves crazy when this happened to ds, and were thinking that we was developing a new allergy to add to his rather long list. He ended up having it for almost two months and was on benedryl almost round the clock. Poor kid was so uncomfortable, and the rashes were huge! Did your dd have a cold in the last while, just prior to the splotches starting? It sometimes shows up like this, but not always as it didnn't for ds. We figured out that it wasn't food related bc he would often go to bed with nothing and would wake up in the morning with hives. Anyways, i'm rambling. If your ped thinks it might be allergy related, pleasse see ann allergist.

Olly often gets blotches that are unrelated to food or allergies. At the moment we are putting it down to heat as it is muggy.

I am NO expert but I thought eczema or hives were allergic reactions. Does the gP think it is hives if not eczema?

Are the splotches red? Wiith a small raised white dot in the middle? That's a hive. Ds would also get large (size of my hand) welts on his torso whichh were aalso hives. Excema is more scaly red rough patches, usually in fthe folds of skin. Hives are usually an allergic response, while excema isn't necessarily.

ugh....no better really!well...i guess they're not worse, but it's not cleared...We went to the GP on tues...saw a different one who is totally stumped & contradicted herself throughout (it can't be the food...it must be something she's exposed to....but keep her off x, y & z....but it can't be the food....."ugh.....wish i had a good doctor.to be fair to her though, she's taking it seriously & wanted me to phone her this morning with an update-she gave us antihistamines-& said she could get us in for a blood test in the hospital later if need be.....i've introduced back in the formula & there doesn't seem to be much difference to it's hard to tell now that she's on the antihistamines.....

Are the splotches better on the antihistamine? How often is she taking it? Sorry it's taking so long to figure out.

To be honest, it doesn't really sound like you're dealing with an allergy. My guess is that it's something viral. Hope you get some answers at the hospital. Keep us posted.

Can you go back to your gp and ask for a referral to an allergist? If might be a while but sometimes if you emphasize how young your dd is it might help. So sorry about the appt. Stay with your gp"'s recommendation for the meds and request a referral.

So it started with the introduction of cows milk formula, But she has no other symptoms? If she isn't bothered by the rash could you wait another week or so and see if it clears on its own?

Or take the formula out, then you will know if it it an allergy or more likely an intolerance.

GP told us to take the formula out on fri for the weekend....saw her again on Tues & she said to put it back in again!!!which we did!Docs today told us to take her off the antihistamines (unfortunately for us cause they made her super drowsey!!! ;) ) I'm def gonna phone the GP tomorrow & see what the next step would be if i went forward myself. Think for now, yes, i will just carry on as before & see if it clears itself/gets significantly worse over the next few days. We're not sure if it is an allergy or just viral...also not sure if it was the formula or a food/cereal....catch 22 re taking out the formula again cause my BM supplies are seriously running out.Im back to doing 1 BF a day for now (so much for being finished with BFing!!!) but im getting practically nothing when i pump so reeeeally hoping it's not the formula!

Ugh, and we have a new one too ATM ::) AND it sounds similar!
http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=242029.0

Okay so only based on our history, and it does sound very similar, though our rash had more whip like white marks through the rash - and raised, I think it is most likely viral.
What I did learn after last time was that you can have a histamine allergic reaction to a virus! - these can last a while too...like weeks.

If the antihistamine helps, and if your LO is generally well, and nothing else has changed then I would give it up to two weeks before panicking. Only because drs etc just can't and won't really do much before tis timeframe unless it is causing LO discomfort/making them unwell, or appears to be a dangerous rash.

As I say this, I have posted in a panic ::) :-* hugs

Ds1 had exactly what zacsmumme described - chronic idiopathic urticaria. Except ds1 had it for almost two months. It really bothered him, so it's great that it's  not bothering your dd.

:( yup we had the same thing, Z was 3 days out from a ped visit for it and it cleared ::)
Z is so much better today, a new rash but this is definately related to him being so poorly..I think the last one was too. He seems to have caught a virus after a virus then its now become an ear infection. Luckily the ABs have kicked in and I have my boy (mostly) back.

Its horrid when they are unwell and you dont know why or where hurts or what to do about it. :-*
