4mo being fussy with bottle-any ideas??
« on: September 03, 2012, 14:52:47 pm »
Hi you helpful people!

My 4mo has become very fussy when feeding and I'm at a loss as to why. He is FF and in a 24 hr period has 5 210ml bottles and we're on 4 hr EASY.

What typically happens is he'll start fine, push the bottle out with his tongue a quarter to a third drunk, I wind him, few burps sometimes a tiny bit if drooly sick, then he won't want any more. I have tried the following....
-different position, lying on playmat, sitting up in my arms
-warm not warm bottle
-distracting with hubby shaking toy above head (did seem to work, only tried once as not doable when on my own!!! Am not an octopus)
-force forceful winding incase more burps stuck

I can generally get him to drink about 150ml but it does take about 45 mins and lots of attempts.

Any ideas? Someone suggested he may be ready for solids? He is a big boy, weighed in today at 17lbs!! Maybe rice milk with the leftover milk??

No other issues to report such as reflux or colic.

What flow teat are you using at the moment? Is he teething - have you tried pain meds or teething gel shortly before a feed?

I would stop the feed at around 20 mins though as you will get into a snacking situation. If he takes less at one feed he should take a bigger feed next time.

I have been doing that-well 30mins and only occasionally forcing for a nearly full bottle as he would go all day only having 100ml a time.

Funny you should mention teething as my hubby is giving him his BT bottle now and he was fussing and whining and then he put his finger in the muslin in his mouth and he's having a good old chew on it - so can we deduct from that it's teething???

It's very possible! See if you can get a look in his mouth, it's usually the bottom middle teeth that come through first and he's the right age for it!

Have you increased the teat size recently? If not that's worth a try. Does he have reflux or any digestive issues?

Not that I'm aware of but I was reading about silent reflux and some of the symptoms apply but it could just be because they apply to lots of babies his age?!?

I increased his teat when he turned 3 mths, do you think he needs another change?

He may well need a faster one by now, messing around with bottles and taking longer to feed are classic signs! It's well worth a try!
