should i decrease solids?
« on: September 06, 2012, 19:33:09 pm »
hi all!tried posting this in the bottle-feeding a few days ago,but doesn't seem to be anybody at home there!hope it's ok to post here....am wondering what i should do...

id really appreciate any advice. my LO is 7MO since the 16th & is currently on 4 milk feeds & 3 solid feeds a day.Due to a "mysterious" rash (which the Gp thought may be formula-related but then changed her mind), i was still doing a morning BF until this morning.we are feeding both BM & formula in the bottles.

the past 2 days, LO has taken very little at certain feeds...hence my wondering if i should merge the two middle feeds into one, or if i should decrease the amount of solids she's getting?i feel like all i do with her since i introduced the 3rd solid meal is feed her in one way or another!!!!

here is my EASY for the past 2 days:
3/9/12
E: 7.34am BF
E: 8.30am 2oz fruit, 1 tblsp cereal, 1.5 oz BM mixed in

E: 1pm 6oz of formula
E: 2pm 1oz natural yoghurt & 1oz apple

E: 5pm 2oz of formula
E: 6pm 1oz potato, 1 oz broccoli

E: 7.05pm 6.5 oz BM

4/912
E: 7.25am BF
E: 8.35am 2 oz fruit & 1 tblsp cereal mixed with 1.5 oz BM

E: 12.54 4 oz of formula
E: 2pm 2 oz veggie (but DH only fed her 1 oz....not too sure if he gave up or she was full....)

E:5pm 6oz of BM
E: 6pm 1 oz natural yoghurt & 1oz pear

E: 7.19pm 5.5 oz formula

She has been sneezing alot today & had a runny nose so i'm wondering if that is affecting things too?

Any advice would be great! Not sure what to do!!!TIA!

Update for 5/9/12
E: 7.35am BF
E: 8.30am 2oz fruit, 1 tblsp cereral, 1oz BM

E: 1pm 4oz formula
E: 1oz of veg & pasta (1st time i've tried her with texture)

E: 5pm 3.5 oz BM in a bottle.....
E: 6pm 1oz yoghurt & 1oz fruit

E: 7.05pm 6oz formula....getting a bit worried at this stage re her fluids...

Update for 6/9/12
E: 7.25am almost 6 oz of BM in bottle
E: 8.35am 2 tblsp cereal mixed with 2 oz fruit & the remaining 2 oz of BM from her bottle

E: 12.50 5.5oz formula
E: 1.45 mixture of 2oz veg, half oz pasta shapes, half oz formula (only 1 oz not eaten)

E: 4.45 almost 4 oz BM in bottle
E: 5.45 1oz yoghurt, 1oz fruit, remaining bit of BM from 4oz bottle

E: 7.10pm 5oz formula

so...should i just let her be? or should i merge 4 bottles into 3? or should i decrease the solids?!

hope there's somebody out there who can help!!! TIA!!!

Hi!

Is this just since the past 2 days? If yes, I'd wait it out a bit, if she was eating well before with similar quantities of milk, it could be just be the runny nose and most likely a cold. If it continues, then I guess it may mean she's ready to move on to 3 feeds.  She does need at least 24 oz of BM / formula a day at least I think. Have you tried putting a feed around 11-ish? Or is she napping around that time? It is surprising that she does very long from 7:30 to 1 PM and not drink that much at that feed ??? Has it always been that way?

Elise

thank you!!!!wow!that was fast!!!really appreciate it!

TBH,it's hard to tell cause im only starting to get the hang of the bottles in the past couple of weeks as she was EBF for the first 6mo.but yes,she used to def take more than that before-in fact, we used to have to slow her down with it.she was never a hungry baby though & was goign from 10.30pm-6am from 8 weeks, just on BM which i was told is unusual.

I EBF so am no good with ozs and bottles - which are the feeds that you are worried about?

I would say that the 4 hour EASY is normally feeds at 7, 11, 3 and 7 (or whenever first feed is) that 2nd feed is along way from breakfast! Maybe bring that forward and she will be hungrier later in the day? We didn't drop a day feed until 10 months but I think it can be earlier for bottle fed babies.

What time is she having naps now?

At this age 4 bottles is better than 3, but as pp says you seem to have a long gap in the morning so maybe spacing things out better would help.

Hi happy. Honestly our Los could be twins!! Dd was never a good feeder either. She was not feeding during the night from about 8 weeks too! Always been on formula tho and I've found since starting solids she's feeding better. This is our easy if it helps at all:

Today

7.30 8oz formula

9 2tbs yoghurt with 1tbs cereal (for some reason she hates milk on cereal-ds is same!!) 1tbs banana

1/1.30 8oz formula

2/2.30 2.5tbs potato and turnip mash with 1tbs cheese

5.15/5.30 10 pasta shells with veggie sauce and 1 tbs cheese

6.45/7 8 oz formula

Hth!!

Thank you ;)

She's had 24oz over the day so that's fine as far as milk intake goes. I would leave things as they are for a while really, give it a couple of weeks and if she still hasn't increased that third bottle then have a re-think.

She is taking a good bedtime feed, I think if that feed starts decreasing because the feed before is too close that may be the time to shift things.

Yeah I found I was feeding her all the time too- she was only taking 4oz at a time before solids so I was doing 6 feeds!! I think she was used to snacking so by spacing out milk gave her tummy time to stretch too iykwim? And she's not decreased quantity. In fact adding cheese and dairy has increased milk intake!

I would keep solids cos that's the way ur headed in end anyway and try increasing amount of milk in the three feeds. Once shes totally bottle fed youll be able to track quantity better too. I also found that dd is never hungry straight after waking up so she needs at least 20 min play before bottle..

she's totally bottle-fed now....maybe i'll see how it goes so & see if i can see a pattern to see when she's hungrier...sometimes the smaller bottle is teh 2nd feed & sometimes it's the 3rd feed....changing the teat has def helped so at least now we'er not going straight from bottle-feed to the highchair for solids!!!one step forward!!!!thanks again!

i used the Annabel Karmel one....you could NOT be a worse cook than me, so if i can make it, you certainly can....& i'm bad...i'm talking "i can burn a cup of tea" bad here!!!!!
here's the recipe:

15g/half oz unsalted butter
1 tblsp plain flour
150 ml/ 5fl oz milk
50g/2oz grated cheese (cheddar/edam/gruyere)

Melt hte butter over a low heat in a saucepan & stir in the flour to make a smooth paste.Whisk in the mik & stir until thickened. Take the saucepan off the heat & stir in the grated cheese. Keep stirring until all the cheese has melted & the sauce is smooth.

I froze it in 1oz cubes & i'll add it to different meals as i need it!good luck!!!

That doesn't sound too bad...will give it a go this week...she adores pasta and cheese so I'm sure a decent white sauce will go down well!
