10mo refusing solids after 3-4 mouthfuls?
« on: September 12, 2012, 15:16:09 pm »
Hi there,

My 10mo has been a really good eater on solids until recently. He is taking 3 meals per day with 3 milk feeds. Recently he has been refusing food after the first 3-4 spoonfuls. He winges, arches his back and fights to break free from the highchair!

I have tried his favourite foods and even this doesn't work. If I distract him with his favourite programmes he may take a few more spoonfuls without really realising it but I can't get him to finish a meal.

I thought maybe he wasn't hungry enough but even if I go back half an hour later it's still the same thing. He has 7 teeth too and teething hasn't stopped him eating before so I am not sure what is up.

Any suggestions?
Samantha

Does he have finger foods yet? Maybe just mix it up a bit? Give him a spoon so he could try himself.

I have introduced a few bits such as toast, corn snacks, rice cakes, steamed veg and fruit but I've never really given him the spoon, probably cos I'm worried he'll throw the food everywhere! He has this habit of whenever he holds the spoon he immediately turns it round so he can chew the end and straight away the food would go flying.

Any tips on letting him trying feeding himself?

Thanks
Samantha

Just give him a spoon to play with (un loaded) whilst you feed him your self maybe?

With regards the finger foods the BLW support thread at the top of this page would probably have some good info.

We gave DS a fork first... that way food doesnt get flung around. By 10 months here we were down to just 2 milk feeds/day... maybe hes trying to tell you too much milk. Just a thought.

That's a good point with the milk intake. I don't think he'd miss the milk in the day TBH, some days he'll drink it others he won't. Might give that a try too.

Thanks!

My son was still on 3 milk feeds at 10 months old.  I think you have to bite the bullet and accept some mess at some point.  Get a plastic mat or put down newspaper and give it a go.
Here's my blog which is focussed on simple food for babies, toddlers and families http://mamacook.blogspot.com/
