5.5 month old not interested, should I stop and try again?
« on: September 13, 2012, 01:51:29 am »
So, I started my DS on solids (just a mouthful really) about 2 weeks ago.  Just giving him a taste every morning at breakfast.  He was showing all the signs, sits quite independently, holds his head up well, interested in what we are eating etc.  He just hasn't gotten interested.  I have persisted, just giving him a few tastes on the end of his spoon but he shuts his mouth and shakes his head.  It seems obvious that he is not into it, so what I want to know is, is it alright to stop trying the solids and start again later? My DD was easy, took to it like a duck to water, this one is throwing me all sorts of curve balls!

What have you tried with him? If it is just rice cereal he just may not like it! Maybe wait another week and try again?

There's no hurry, I'd wait.  I know plenty of babies who started after 7 months, or after 10 months, and are none the worse for wear.

He's had pureed apple, pear and rice cereal and a bit of banana.  Shall I just keep trying perhaps once a week after giving him a break of a week or so and see what happens?.....its not like he's losing weight or anything.  At 5 months he was over 8kg (which I think is 17lbs) so not doing badly by any stretch.

There is no "right" way, but personally I would wait 2-4 weeks and start again with soft chunks that baby can pick up and control himself (baby-led weaning).  Avocado, banana, soft cooked carrot or sweet potato are all mashable with gums.  Solids are really just for skill development/practice, not nutrition at this age.  I tried both ways and my kids did much better with the BLW approach than with spoon foods.

Thanks for the advice, I gave him a break since my last post and then the other day tried again and now 3 days later he is opening his mouth for the spoon and launching himself at it begging for more like a little bird.  A few extra weeks was the charm!
