Need help with 2-1 transition with almost 12 mths old
« on: September 14, 2012, 14:02:31 pm »
Hey all,

With the help of some helpful moms in the sleep section, I had DS's sleep figured out pretty well. For a while, I even knew what to do when things went awry, but seems like I am stuck this time and need some help again :D

So DS will be 1 yr old in 2 weeks. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has been taking two naps everyday, but nights are awful..lots of random NWs and super early wakeup time. Let me start off with his EASY for right now (this is for when sometimes he wakes up at 7 am)

WU: 7 am and 8 oz milk in sippy cup
E: solids at 8 am
S: 10 - 10:30 am
E: 11:45 am  - after which we go pick up 3 yr old DD from school..back home by 12:45.
S: 2:15pm/2:30 pm to 3:30 pm (i wake him up to get a decent BT)
E: Dinner at 4:30 pm / 5:00 pm
BT: 7:30 pm
NWs: random...but could be as high as 4 times during the night...
EW: around 4:30 am; he was sick the past couple of days and coughing a lot..so I would give him some milk to soothe his throat and put him back to sleep....I don't normally offer milk

So here's the deal...I know that he can do more for his morning A..may be 4 hours or so...but I put him down early so that he can take a little bit of a longer nap in the afternoon thus giving me more time with DD when she comes back from school....I could even possibly do ok with just one long nap, but that would fall right around the time when I have to go pick up DD...so in short, I am ok with one nap, it's just that the timing of it doesnt work right for me...I am not sure how to tweak it to make it work for us..

he woke up at 5:15 am and absolutely refused to go back to sleep, even with milk (I was desperate!)..

thank you for your help guys!!

Took us until 13 months before I could stretch DS morning a time to a 1230pm nap.... which looks like what your aiming for. I would think the multiple NWs are actually from being overtired... my DS at 14months still sleeps 2 hours during the day, and 12-12.5 at night, your LO is only getting about 1.5hours. So I would suggest making BT earlier than 730, maybe at 7 and see if that helps.

The first A of 3 hrs is really short for 1 yr :-\ then a longer A on a 30 min nap could mean he is in an UT/OT loop.
Your def in the 2-1...it's just adjusting the day to work with it if he isn't really for 1 nap yet.
Would something like those work for you/him. I'll do example WU of 6.30
WU 6.30
A 3.5 hrs
CN 10-10.30
A 2.5 hrs
Nap 1 for as long as he likes
A 4-4.5 hrs
BT ~7

Hey everyone,

sorry to post so late to your responses...i tried what you guys suggested for a while and it seemed to work except for EW at 5:50 am. Then the unthinkable happened...we took a weekend trip and things got even more whacky...DS completely refused to sleep (naps and BT) when we got back home...used to be that i could just lay him in his crib and he would go to sleep on his own...no winddown needed :((..i thought I was so lucky!!! Now, everytime I lay him down, sleepy or not, he stands right back up and refuses to go to sleep.

We only managed to get about 30 mins to max of 1 hour of sleep during the day past couple of days
so yesterday I tried this:-

WU: 7:00 am
Sleep: 11:45 - 12:45 (he started to dose off while having lunch so we finished half of our lunch and I took him to his room - he was too tired to fight me)
BT: 6:00 am (wasnt sure what BT to go for, should I have done earlier?)
EW: 5:50 am

Zacsmumme: - I read in one of your replies on a post to go for 5 hours A time before nap and 5 1/2 hrs before BT, so I think I am going to try that as that is where I think we are headed..

he woke up at 5:50 am today and seemed sleepy around 9:45 am. He did not sleep when I took him to his room..so I will wait one more hour and take him in again...crossing my fingers for this one!

ok...so this morning, i tried to get him down at 5 hours but he refused to sleep and ended up going down for his nap at 11:18 am..which is 5.5 hrs of A time. He was coughing a lot all throughout his nap and woke up crying at almost 1:00 pm. So that is 1 hr 45 mins of nap.

Should I aim for 4.5 hours of A time before BT or should I stick with 5 hours?

I would try an EBT so he can catch up on the last few days overnight - if you think it'll work ;)
hugs on things going to pot x

I will try an EBT of 5:30 am and see how it goes...I do think that he might be OT because of lost sleep. We'll see how it goes tonight, but something tells me I am going to get an EW.

I don't think that he is trying to do anything developmentally, but he has a cold and the congestion interferes with sleep a lot.

Thanks for your help!

hugs, have you tried vicks or eucolyptous oil in hot water to help clear the congestion? (in his room)
