Does teething affect appetite?
« on: September 15, 2012, 19:14:07 pm »
Hi i posted on bottle feeding too cos i wasnt sure which would be right place...

I think dd is actively teething at moment. Is it normal to be off milk feeds but not solids? She's has 3 8oz bottles-should I try feeding milk little and often or will that just encourage snacking?

How old is she?  Teething can affect how much milk they want because the sucking action can cause pain.  What the best course of action will really depend on age.  The younger she is, the more important it is for her to have the milk.
Here's my blog which is focussed on simple food for babies, toddlers and families http://mamacook.blogspot.com/

Hi thanks for replying...

Sorry thought id mentioned...she's 8 months tomorrow. She's never been keen so 24oz when she's feeding well is a lot for her...

Yes - totally normal! Try pain meds or teething gel just before a feed if you can to see if that helps. If not it usually only lasts a few days so I would just keep offering milk as normal, if she is eating solids and drinking some milk it's fine for a few days. If it continues longer it may be worth getting her checked out - sometimes ear infections can be symptomless and put them off their bottles.

THanks for getting back to me Laura that's useful to know. I'm already giving meds before naps so I'll try teething gel first and see how she gets on! Thanks again!

The other thing to try if she doesn't pick her milk intake up is to scale back the solids - depending on how much she has at a meal! Sometimes they do go through milk intake blips around this age so look at what she's eating to make sure she isn't filling up on solids to the detriment of milk.

Hope you have had a better day!
