When did you switch toddler off of whole milk?
« on: September 25, 2012, 00:06:33 am »
At DDs recent checkup with her ped he mentioned that she can now have whatever milk we are drinking...

She's 2 years old, has a sippy with milk for meal times and while reading at about 1pm, then a bottle before bed (which we hope to cut out soon once her last molars have completely come in).  I guess I'm concerned that she won't get what she needs since DH and I drink 1%.  It seems like such a big difference!  We also eat light cheese/sour cream/cottage cheese (and our yogurt is 2% or something like that).  She's average height and weight, so I guess the doc figures she should be ok with the switch ???

Any thoughts or advice?  When did you switch your toddler to what you were drinking?  Should I go to 2% milk first before switching her to what we drink?

I started giving dd 1% at about 2.5....I kept her on the full fat a bit longer because she was so thin.  Then I realized that her being thin had nothing to do with food...LOL...she ate like a grown up then and still does now! She had a varied diet and didn't require those extra fat calories...so we went to 1%.   Most of the fat in whole milk is saturated, and toddlers just don't need that.

 HTH!

I switched DD from formula to whole milk at 1yr and to almond milk which is what we drink normally at around 14mo... she has always been in the 90th% so didn't have to worry about getting the "fat" coming from cow's milk. worked for us! :)

We just switch Logan to 1% and he is 26 months. All other dairy is full fat.

With all due respect, toddlers and in fact kids in general DO require a certain amount of sat fats for efficient function of nerves and brains especially. There really isn't any reason, outside of "the lipid hypothesis" (which has had and is still getting holes blown into it by new research daily and has been pretty much disproven), which in turn has led to the "Standard American Diet" and sat fats being demonized. Vegetable oil, on the other hand, has its own issues. (I can provide lotsa links; PM me if interested.) I lost nearly 20 pounds in the last year and I won't tell you how much butter, coconut oil, bacon fat, and full-fat dairy we consume here. LOL Suffice it to say that my (no former) doctor's jaw just about fell into her lap when I disclosed that we eat and cook with coconut oil regularly; she'd just gotten done telling me how spectacular my cholesterol numbers were at my annual physical.

[A quick aside: the vast majority of the research that went into Ancel Keys' work was done with hydrogenated fats, including hydrogenated tropical oils; non-hydrogenated sat fats are in fact proving to be downright essential to healthy nerve growth and brain function, not only in children but adults as well. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig10/mercola44.1.html]

So the long and short of it is that you don't need to stop full-fat dairy in the least, not for your LO or even for you. The full-fat stuff is actually more satisfying and keeps you fuller longer, so if you're worried about weight change, you may be consuming FEWER net calories by not being hungry sooner.

Hmmmm...definitely something to think about, thanks for the advice ladies :)  Right now I'm thinking I'll switch her to 2% and see how it goes.  I'm not comfortable switching our other dairy products to full fat so I'm going to have to get creative and introduce some more good fats into our diet...

Just curious - any reason why not?

I think DS was around 18mo when we started giving him semi-skimmed (don't know this in terms of %) which is what we drink. All other dairy is full fat.

Both my parents have high cholesterol.  My dad has had high cholesterol since he was quite young, at which point my mom switched us all to lower fat stuff.  Because of my family history (my grandpa also had his first heart attack at 44 years old) I don't know that I'm comfortable taking the risk of "testing it out" to see what will happen to my cholesterol levels.  Also because I grew up eating lower fat dairy products I find my tummy isn't so tolerant of the full fat versions (DH also has tummy troubles with the full fat dairy).  I really feel crummy after I eat them :(

That said, I'm also not a "no fat" kinda person either.  Most things I buy are the middle of the road versions fat wise.  And I don't even consider buying light salad dressing :)

For us the doctor told to continue with whole milk for now. And ds is almost 3. We drink 1.5% (which is the one that we find here before the 0.1%).

The UK recommendations are full fat up to 5yo but at least to 2yo. they can have 2% fat from 2yo but the 1% isnt recommended as a drink before 5yo due to a lack of fat soluable vitamins.
I have ds 3yo and 17mo and both still drink full fat milk. when ds2 turns 2 I will switch but I cant buy red and green and blue every day.
Ds1 gets semi-skimmed at nursery.

We are in the US, and my family has a history of obesity, so the pediatrician recommended we switch to 1% or skim at age 18 months.  However, dd1 kept on having stomach aches and ear infections and did not like to drink her milk.  My friend who is an osteopath recommended we switch back to whole milk or goat's milk because the fat makes it easier to digest.  I can't deal with goat milk, so we all went back on whole milk.
No more tummy aches, no more ear infections, and nobody has put on weight (except the ones who are supposed to)
My lipid profile has always been good, did not change either way.

^This is exactly what our pediatrician recommended.  I switched DS from formula to whole cow's milk at 12 months old.  Then, at his 2 year check-up, his pediatrician said it was ok to switch him to 2% milk.  DH and I drink skim milk (just like the way it tastes better too), but we buy still buy 2% for DS (who is now 2 years 9 months).  HTH!
