Hi all!

A short background info: we cut dairy from DS2's diet about 5 months ago. Since then I could reintroduce dairy products, like yogurt, butter, sour cream, he's fine with all those and tolerates even baked dairy. I trialled cow's milk in August for a week, but he went back to multiple NWs, so I stopped and sleep is OK again.

My question is - do you think it's worth trialling cow's milk from time to time? I'm giving him HAF right now, but TBH it's quite pricey, so it'd be great if he just outgrew this intolerance!

And if he doesn't outgrow it, how long should I be giving him HAF? 2 yo?

Other types of milk, like soy and rice is even more pricey than HAF here, that's why we haven't changed it.

I trial DS every 6 months, just after birthdays and half birthdays. It's unlikely you'll notice a change if you trial more frequently than this!

He still has HAF at 2yo and everyone is happy with that as it means he's getting the right amount of dairy. He drinks it with a straw or from a sippy though, bottles have been ditched

If he is doing OK with milk products but not direct cow's milk would it be worth trying a normal formula? I assume it would be cheaper ad that it is not the same as drinking cow's milk IYKWIM?

Thanks for the advice! I will do trials at half birthdays, it seems logical. I just thought it'd be worth to try as he's fine with all milk products... $:-\$

TBH, I haven't thought of trying a normal formula, but it is worth a shot! I'll get some and will get back to tell you if it worked!

Hypoallergenic formula. In HAF the proteins are partially broken down. I'm not sure whether they have lactose or not though $:-\$

The ones we have here are Nutramigen and Alimentum.

Nini, we have Nestle's Nan HA 2 here. For the lactose intolerant we have lactose free milk and yogurt as well in Serbia, so I'm pretty sure, you can find some in your country, too!

Thanks! We elimated all dairy for about 1.5 weeks with some changes in BMs, I just reintroduced butter and he seems to be tolerating it. I'm going to reintroduce cheese and then yogurt. I so hope he can tolerate them too. He doesn't seem to miss drinking milk, but his diet is so limited w/o milk products!

Lucky you that you could reintroduce milk products so soon! When I cut all dairy from DS's diet, I was told to keep it for at least 6-8 weeks, as it takes at least 2 wks for milk proteins to clear out from the organism. Good luck to you!

So, we're on day 3 with normal formula and all is well so far, no extra NWs. I was just wondering how long I should keep with it to be sure he tolerates it? I bought a smaller package, it's enough for 5-6 days. Is that enough to tell for sure that he's OK with it?

My DD is fine with all dairy except cow's milk as well... I also tried a standard formula and it took about 2 weeks for the intolerance to rear it's ugly head.

Given that he is fine with cooked milk in baking etc... you could offer regular milk after you have warmed it above 72 (this breaks down the proteins that are causing the issues) and see how he does...

Nini- Lactose intolerance is totally different from milk protein intolerance. Lactose is found in all dairy products and someone with an intolerance to it will not outgrow it over time (as is often the case with MPI).

Not really an issue with lactose intolerance hun... lactose doesn't hang around in your system like milk protein will - it takes 2-3 weeks to clear.

That said, lactose intolerance is actually quite rare in kids... what symptoms does he have?

He had loose stools and complaining of belly pain before each poop. I brought a stool sample to ped. and she said "it is loose"...duh! Why else would I bring it

She also said it not common in our heritage, but thought it was worth trying. Everything improved w eliminating dairy, but has not gone back with the addition of butter, cheese yogurt or ice cream.

Nini- kids can be tested for lactose intolerance. I wouldn't assume he has it without having him tested... it's a breath test. Super simple. As a general rule, he would have belly pain/cramping etc within a couple hours of having lactose (so milk/softer cheeses etc)...

So, here's what happened:

I started with normal formula last Monday. Everything was fine until Friday, when things took a bad turn. He started his horrendous NWs again! It was very sudden, like one night he had one NW (as he's had for a few months now) and then the other night he started waking up every hour screaming in pain at the first few NWs, and then just rolling around, tossing and turning for an hr or more, not being able to resettle...

I'm a bit baffled here, because 2 things coincided and I just don't know what's the real cause of this - and it may well be that it's a mixture of both...

Just brainstorming here, please help me - my brain isn't functioning right from sleep deprivation... $:-\$
So, it could be that he reacted to the new formula, although someone said it should be around 2 wks when the intolerance rears it's ugly head....
Or, it's the teething again... We lost his amber anklet, plus he's a very slow teether (takes about 6 wks for a new tooth to cut). Today the 4th bottom front tooth had finally cut through, but some of the molars might be on the move, too...

And yet again, even when I medicated (gave Nurofen), he was still up every hr, so it had no effect at all!

Well, I went back to the old HAF and will continue medicating. What do you think? Am I on the right track here?

DD had the exact same reaction to the normal formula hun... it all went back to normal again about 2-3 days after I changed her back.

HI, yes I would go back to the HAF and wait for things to settle. You can then re-introduce and then if the same thing happens you know milk is the cuprit. x

Hi all!

DS is 18 mo soon and I'm trialling cow's milk again, but now instead of standard formula I started with cooked cow's milk on Kara's advice. We're on day one, so it's way too early to tell anything, I'd just like to ask you to hold my hand through this trial. I hope so much he'll be fine with it!

Last night he was up every hour, though I don't think it's because of the milk - it's been the second day only, I think intolerance would not appear so early, wouldn't it?

He is teething, and even the 18 mo regression might be at play, so it's kinda hard to make a clever guess... :-/

Had a been NW previously? Looking back he has a reaction after 4 days of normal formula. I am not sure how cooked dairy compares to this TBH. Could it be formula is broken down so it would take longer to react? I assumed that it would be on a par to cow's milk- but maybe not?

We had a much longer run with normal formula before seeing a reaction than with milk for sure... When we first trialled milk, we got a reaction in some capacity within a couple of days.

It was for sure with us... the moaning/crying in her sleep was the worst! The milk was a little more extreme with all out screaming, but same reaction.

Well, I think it wasn't the milk yet, last night he STTN till 4.45 and then woke for a dummy and went straight back till 6.30. Yeah, we've been having NWs for a while now, and they're quite weird ones as he's not crying or moaning or anything, just tossing and turning for even an hour or so and only then calling for me to help him go back to sleep... $:-\$

Yes, Kara, I think it might be the regression - he's had 2 NWs last night, and he went back to sleep both times with only a backrub... So, it is the 5th day today and still no signs of the intolerance... I hope I haven't just jinxed it!

I was waiting for 2 weeks to go by... Well, tomorrow will be exactly 2 weeks since we have started and YAY!!!! No sign of the intolerance!!!!

I do hope it's final now - he's been having about 450 mls of cooked milk a day. We had some NWs, but nothing major, I think it was a combo the regression and teething (he cut a canine meanwhile...).

I hope you find the right milk for you, Kara! I saw your thread, but I couldn't help, as we in Serbia don't really have an alternative to cow's milk....

Well, I think we're done for now... We have already introduced all dairy (cheese, butter, yoghurt, sour cream...) and now if he's fine with cooked cow's milk, I'll stick to it. I could try raw cow's milk, but I don't think I'll bother just now...
