6 week old short naps
« on: September 27, 2012, 07:52:36 am »
Sorry but can i please jump in and just say my 6 week old wee girl is exactly the same. I tried swaddling last night and she thumped around frantically trying to get out of it.

I feel bad as if i'm spending not time with her as when she wakes she wants fed straight away, then nappy change then maybe 10 mins of talking to her and she starts to show sleep cues so i try to put her down but she only sleeps for 30-45 mins.

She currently takes her naps in her moses basket in the living room, is this ok?

When she is awake she is totally fasinated with the TV and will turn her head to see if whereever she is, could this be too much stimulation for her, even if it is just 5-10 mins?

Thanks
Gail

Hi Gail,

so how long is she generally awake for from the time she wakes until she's asleep for her next nap? Totally fine to have her in the moses basket in the living room - I think that's the UK recommendation at this age, naps in same room as a parent/caregiver? Although if it's noisy (eg, if there are other LOs around) this may disturb her when she's in a light sleep phase, esp around 40-45 mins.

she is totally fasinated with the TV and will turn her head to see if whereever she is, could this be too much stimulation for her, even if it is just 5-10 mins?

Yup, could be for sure. I'd try to keep the TV off, or at least out of her sight! Short naps can be because of over-stimulation as well as over-tiredness.

Hi,
She is usually awake for 1hr but sometimes she will just not sleep and she can be up for 2 hours or the full 3 before her next feed. In which case she will not nap again till bedtime as she is so tired but can't sleep.

I've split this into a new post for you :)

Can you please post your EASY for us? Are there any signs of discomfort? Is there anywhere that she does sleep well - in the carrier, stroller or carseat?

I feel bad as if i'm spending not time with her as when she wakes she wants fed straight away, then nappy change then maybe 10 mins of talking to her and she starts to show sleep cues

This is completely normal for a newborn - there really isn't much time for interaction when they're little! It won't be long until she's awake for longer :)
