Worried about calcium
« on: October 02, 2012, 00:34:23 am »
My DD is completely dairy free but still on 3 bottles of HAF a day. DS occasionally eats cheese and yogurt but doesn't tolerate actually drinking milk and hasn't since he was about 15 months old. I might try and go completely dairy free with DS also. I am curious what other foods are high in calcium so that I can make sure they are both getting enough. I would like to be rid of the HAF before too long but don't want to if I haven't figured the calcium business out. So basically, what foods are high in calcium and would you supplement a toddler or just try and get it into them through foods? They are both great eaters and eat large varieties of foods.

Leafy greens are super high in calcium, I've been making green smoothies in the morning for James and I -- I do some orange juice, yogurt (though you could just as easily swap that out or substitute), fruit of some sort (berries, banana, apple, pear, etc) and greens (spinach, kale, chard, etc).  It's so good, you don't actually realize you're drinking spinach.  :)

Here you go

List of CALCIUM rich non dairy foods - MSPI/ Dairy Allergy

Olly has always been dairy free but was given a calcium supplement by his dietician - worth asking your doctor?

We do a calcium supplement...Spencer is totally dairy free, and Masyn is really only eating yogurt now and then, and cheese (besides what I might use in cooking).  The smoothie sounds great, will have to see if they would drink something like that!

You can sweeten with honey too, might make it more appealing for the kids.  :)

Love the smoothie idea! That's perfect as I make smoothies often so I will just throw some of that stuff in there! Thanks so much for the list of foods also. That's really helpful. DS sees the paed in a few weeks and DD sees paed in a few days so I will also ask about supplementing.

With Olly I had to write a food diary for a few days so she could get an idea of what vits and mins he was getting. May be worth doing the same before you see the Paed?
