is it ok to drop lunchtime bf for 11mth old?
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:56:49 am »
hi! DD is 11 mths. I return to work full time when she is 12mths (3 weeks away).

ATM her easy is
Wu then bf
Breakfast
Nap then bf
Lunch
Generally nap refusal for the afternoon...
Bf
Dinner
Bf (after bath) - usually small
Bt
Most nights 1 nf...

A little while ago I had thought about starting to wean the lunchtime bf, but waited to see if she'd do it herself naturally. For the most part she hasn't! So maybe now it's time to do it (i guess?!) as i won't be bfing her at lunchtime when i go back to work.

I have read the weaning sticky, but i am nervous.... She eats solids ok, i think. She's only just gotten top 2 teeth that aren't all the way through, and one next to them is poking through. Still teething....

Normally for breakfast she'd eat cereal (either baby cereal or normal weetbix) and maybe some fruit too (depending on appetite that day), or scrambelled egg (served with toast but she doesn't eat much toast or bread yet).
Lunch is fingerfood of a few things like cucumber, tomato, crackers with peanut butter or vegemite or hummus dip, cheese stics, fruit pieces. Just a random variety of whatever. I can't wait until she can eat sandwiches...
Dinner is a decent serve of mostly fingerfood vegetables eg carrot, zuchhini, broccoli, with plain pasta like macaroni sprinkled with cheese, and steamed pear slices. She loves that pasta right now. Sometimes i'll give her yoghurt too, and a try of my dinner or leftover if it's suitable.

So is she eating enough to drop the lunch bf? I always give water with meals and in between and she sometimes drinks a fair bit. She'll make up the bf needs at wu and after i get home/bt won't she? I am a bit nervous about it and how she'll go. Maybe she'll be better if i'm not around and she's distracted......

Totally okay Caitlin ;)  Many babies are down to 2 BF's each day at this age - wake and bedtime only.

We dropped a feed at ~10/11 mths and were down to two. A had pre nap and Bt (so dropped breakfast) but it doesn't really matter which one as long as it works for you and your LO ;)

thanks ladies. I know in theory it should be fine, just worried that DD's 'range of food' is ok enough to supply nutirients atm... Ok i will bite the bullet and start with no daytime bf tomorrow.

The only thing I can see that would be missing there is any sort of meat, but then she's having some protein and iron from other sources (like cheese, eggs, green vegetables etc).

Like a PP said, a lot of LOs are on somewhere from 2-4 BFs at 11m so you'd still be in that range if you dropped 1 BF.

thanks amanda. Yes, she hasn't had or liked much meat yet. We've been vegetarian for 4 years and have just reintroduced meat into our diet. She has really only had tuna rissoles and a bit of minced beef shepherds pie all blended up... I must start trying her with more. I will have to rescue her portions before DH smothers salt based seasonings all over it!
Glad you think her nutrition is ok atm...

lol maybe not, but i'm still happy that your opinion  backs up my own feeling that dd should be pretty ok food-wise right now! And we dropped lunchtime bf today. Made it to 4.30pm for bf before dinner without drama. Phew!
