Help me!
« on: October 24, 2012, 03:29:02 am »
I'm on night 3 of implementing EASY for my 6 month old daughter (spirited).

She's been up for 2 hours since 2.30am and I'm at the end of my tether. She just goes to sleep and then suddenly wakes and starts screaming again. I do shh pat and when she gets bad I do pu/pd. what am I doing wrong?

Well - it totally depends on about 3000 different things hun ;)

Could you post your daily routine as it has been in EAS format?

Like this:

E: 7am wake and eat
A:
S: 1030-12pm  etc...

Ok here's what it's been today.

E 0700 BF
A
E 0800 solids
A
S 1030-1100 (was trying to get her down from 9am - showing tired cues)
E 1100 BF
A
E 1200 solids
A
S 1315-1345
E 1500 BF
A
S 1615-1645
E 1745 solids
A
E 1900 BF
A (bath, book, cuddle)
S 1930
E 2245 Dream feed

Every one of her day time naps has been a struggle. I can spend up to an hour and half settling her. Same issue, she goes to sleep then jolts up screaming :(

It seems all I do is * try* to get her to sleep without success.

This is hard, particularly with a spirited - if they're not smack bang in their sleep window, they struggle to go to sleep. I think she was probably undertired at 9am and by 10:30, quite overtired, hence the 30min nap.

As a starting point for her age, I'd start off with a routine a bit more like this (unless she's used to going for a nap after much shorter times):
7 - wake, BF
8 - solids
10 - nap
11:30 - wake, BF
12:30 - solids
2:30 - nap
4 - wake, BF
5 - solids
7 - BF
7:30 - asleep for the night

You may find you need to be there at the 30min mark and do hold through the jolts or shush/pat to try and get her to extend the nap if she's never napped longer than 30-45min since 4 months of age.

Hugs! Getting a spirited LO to sleep is tricky but they're so much fun when they're awake that its worth it :)

Thanks Bec! She went down at 5.15am in the end - I think she was teething hence the awake time. I'll try putting her down later in the day to see if that helps. She has never liked napping in the day and has Bren known not to nap at all :o

I am not an expert at all but my little one only did naps of 45 min for weeks it was def developmentle for him then after weeks of trying different a times, extending naps etc he just started sleeping longer and being able to get himself back to sleep.
I know its, easy for me to say but hang in there, you will get there in the end. X

My spirited boy was known to not sleep all day at one stage too. There are ways and means to help them cope with going to sleep (they just don't want to miss out on anything and don't cope with transitions very well) but getting her into a routine and getting her body used to sleeping is probably going to be your most important first step. By this age, DS also needed to be in the same place when he stirred during a nap as he had been when he went to sleep, so if he fell asleep on me and then went into his cot, he'd wake at 30 or 45min and not go back to sleep but if he went to sleep in the cot he would be able to get to the next sleep cycle.
