5 mo eating less?
« on: November 03, 2012, 14:16:08 pm »
DS is 5 mo and has been eating about 5 oz each bottle, sometimes a little more.  But the last two days he's only eaten 4 oz each bottle, sometimes only 2-3. He's on a 4 hour EASY and is still happy and doesn't seem to be having any other problems.  Should I be worried?  I just wonder because he's such a lightweight that he really can't afford to do this for very long.

Here are some possibilities I came up with:
--Can you feel any teeth coming through, or is he sick?  Sometimes those can affect appetite.
--He also could be ready to go longer than 4h between feeds.
--How much and when does he eat during the night?  My DS, at about this, was eating too close to his morning bottle and it was throwing his appetite off for the rest of the day.

I can't feel any teeth and he doesn't seem to be showing any signs of teething.  He's STTN so that wouldn't be an issue either (his DF bottle is the only one that he's still taking really well right now).  His health seems fine, he's not been fussy or had any other symptoms.  That said his poop was a little looser than normal this morning, but not anything too out of the ordinary.

He may be ready to stretch his E times a little.  I think I'll wait this out a couple more days and see if he starts eating better again, if not I'll stretch him.

Yeah, if there's nothing else obvious going on, I'd wait a couple more days, too.

Oh!!  Just thought of something else: sometimes my kids would get frustrated if the bottle nipple was starting to be too "young" for them and the flow wasn't as fast for them anymore.  Any chance he might be ready for the next size nipple?

I thought about that too...I tried the next size (which is recommended for 4 mo) before this started but it seemed too fast for him, but he may just need some time to adjust.

^^  When you change nipple size, you do have to do it cold turkey and give them a day or two to adjust to the new flow speed... I always found that sitting DD a touch more upright helped her adjust a little easier ;)
