is it time for a sippy?
« on: November 10, 2012, 20:33:30 pm »
DD takes water qutie happily (sometime & varying quantities!!!) from a free-flow valve closed sippy cup.
i knwo she's supposed to be off bottles by 1YO, so i'm just wondering if i shoudl start to try & transition her to formula in the sippy instead of teh bottle at one of her feeds.she's on 3 bottles a day now-usually between 5-7oz each...TIA
(ps DD will be 10MO on the 16th)

Hi happy not seen u on boards for a while- all ok?

Re sippy been wondering the same so tagging along...you could give her a sippy during a meal rather than taking a bottle away straightaway and see how she does? I'm going to try that once I've stopped thickening her milk (not long now as she feeding much better)...xx

hey aishi!i've missed everyone!!!!all ok here but my ***bleeping*** wireless connection was majorly acting up so i couldn't get online at home...i was frantically trying to keep up to date with my phone whenever i left the house, but you know fro my other posts that that doesn't happen too often..hence my lack of BWing!!!!i swear, i was having withdrawal symptoms!!!every time i thought it was back working, it would cut off again mid-session!!!hoping things are fixed now, once & for all!!!!

anyway!!!!here i am!!!!i guess it was good preparation for when i go back to work in a few weeks (but that's a whole other thread!!!)

what do you mean re thickening her milk?

Honestly I wouldn't be too worried at this point. You could try it in a sippy and see, but not sure why she has to be off them by one?  My kids took sippys super early, but if tHey hadn't wanted to I wouldn't have pushed it until they were much older. Its the same difference really, and as long as they aren't carting it around all day or falling asleep with a bottle (teeth issues) then I don't see the point in pushing it.

I've learned that "supposed" to doesn't really wash all the time, especially if it is something that isn't a big deal in the larger scheme.  My 4 year old still uses a straw sippy and I'm not too worried about it. I'm sure by the time she leaves home she will drink from an open cup ;)

I found that as my son grew older he started to drink more and more during his meals and less and less from his bottles, so slowly went from three bottles to none between the 10 month-14 month period.  First to go was the midday bottle, then the morning bottle, then the bedtime bottle I "helped" him wean by adding a nighttime snack with milk to drink, which caused him to drink less out of the bottle.  So rather than switching the bottles to sippy cups I used it as an opportunity to wean him to meals and solids :)

HTH!

I can't remember when I made the switch (sorry!), I guess around the 10 month mark?? but I did start to do milk with meals and water inbetween time to quench thirst.

I agree with Heidi - no rush to get rid of bottles... DD is 2 now and still has 2 a day... as long as they drink the bottle and get on with the day, no need to worry at all.  DD sits down, drinks her bottle in a few minutes and that's it.  If they are packing it around all day, that's an issue.

I would try formula in her sippy and see how she does... but do remember that she does need 20 ozs of milk (and other dairy) a day still.. you don't want to cut bottles and have her stop taking milk.

Thanks Kara for mentioning the amount of milk that they still need!!  Definitely make sure that she is getting the amount of milk/formula that she needs, and there is no rush to get rid of the bottles if she isn't getting enough from a cup.  Making sure that they are getting the nutrition that they need is much more important than weaning off a bottle!!  Try it in a sippy and if it doesn't work, then don't be scared to keep the bottles for a little longer ;)

if there's no rush, then i'm in no rush!!!!bottles are a bit of a pain in this house still i'm afraid...she takes ages!she's not mobile yet so she doesn't have th option of carting it around with her, but we may run into trouble once (if!) she ever gets moving!

Hmm... a feed shouldn't take more than 20 mins... how long is she taking to finish?

Yeah, that was one reason we switched to sippy cups...bottles weren't fast enough! I had actually split a nipple open for S becuse she was unhappy with her bottle.

oh jeepers, it varies...BT bottles are usually within 30mins, bt the other 2 bottles.....we could keep at it forever!!!!she starts & sucks & sucks like she's gasping, but its' like she takes enough to quench her thirst & then gets distracted!we tried a faster flow teat a couple of weeks ago but she vomited badly that night (not sure if the two were linked though) so i'm afraid to try it again!maybe i should though...it def sped up the feed!

we did it that day for the 3 feeds & she took them fine (the previous tiem we had tried she got really cross!)...i'll wait till the weekend so & try the fast flow one then-at least i'll have DH around if we have any "incidents"!!!
