"Normal" reaction to cow's milk intro?
« on: November 21, 2012, 22:07:38 pm »
So DD is now 2 and still on formula.. she doesn't have MPI/MPSI and is fine with all dairy including milk that is cooked... just hasn't been able to tolerate cow's milk straight out.  It started with a spit up/refluxy reaction at 14 months after sipping an ounce only (no she doesn't have reflux either, actually never really spit up as a baby either!).  Her reaction is getting to be less and less.. happy when awake but sleep is disrupted somewhat - just moans/whimpers but doesn't wake or have shorter nights... naps don't suffer as much as night sleep.

So, if I do a trial again, how much of a reaction is "normal" when making the switch?  I know some kids have zero reaction and that some have a week or two of tummy troubles while they adjust to the new proteins... and things like constipation etc crop up.

So what will tell me that no, she is not ready yet?

TIA!

my DS ends up with diarrhea within a day of having any dairy, baked or not.  also, a patch of eczema on his face flares up pretty quickly.

Yikes - luckily, we don't have anything close to that.. she eats yogurt/cheese etc without any issues... we have never had excema and she does have a cow's milk based formula without trouble.

She had about 3 ozs tonight and has gone off to sleep just fine... it's been an hour and no whimpering/moaning at all... transition is generally about 1 hr 5 mins so will listen for it...

Dumb question: do I now skip a day and then try again with a bigger offering or should I keep consistent with the small 3 oz offering for a few days time?

I would stop the straight cows' milk for several weeks at least before trying it again. If she has a sensitivity - and what you're describing might be MPI (we can handle cooked milk and yogurt/cultured dairy here as well, but not regular milk from the store) - then her gut will need time to heal or the damage can become cumulative.

^^ ??

I am confused - we had no reaction last night at all Deb...

It has been a few months since her last trial.

Oops, sorry, I was reading distracted - this happens when there are kids in the same room. LOL No wonder you're confused - *I* was! ::)

OK, listen for whimpering, ANY sign of tummy trouble/tummyache, skin patches/flaky skin. The moaning/whimpering might be tummyache or something else, but if you can pin it down - does it happen only after dairy? - it's informative.

Sorry about the confusion - I need to read the rest of stuff, not just think that I did!

LMAO!  No worries Deb  ;)  Pesky kids!

Well, I take it back... we certainly have a reaction.  Talked to DH this morning - he thinks I was unconscious last night cause he heard her over the monitor overnight whimpering and such throughout the night :(  She was quite whiny all morning (still is)... everything is making her upset... she has pooped twice as well which is odd for her...

I give up... Almond/coconut milk it is!
