I think it could definitely be the teeth - my LO is the queen of EWs when she's teething ::) Have you tried a dream feed of meds around 3/4am?

I don't think the nap is too long - my LO had just transitioned to one nap at this age, and was doing 2-3 hour naps with an 11 hour night, no problem. I do think I would stick with the 7pm bedtime so long as the nap is 2hrs or more, though.

I haven't tried the meds dream feed - do you mean just wake her to give a small bottle with meds in it before she has a chance to wake?  We had a 5am waking today and no going back to sleep.  Will it ever end lol?!?!

It's not so much the early wakings that I mind, it's just not knowing when/if they will end.  I wish someone could say 'they will last for x months'.  I'd be much happier with that to look forward to!

do you mean just wake her to give a small bottle with meds in it before she has a chance to wake?

I did it with a medicine syringe - just pop it in her mouth while she's sleeping. My LO would usually then half wake up, enough to want a drink of water from a sippy cup to wash it down, and would go straight back to sleep. Sometimes she would need to be resettled, but at that time I generally could resettle her without too much trouble, whereas if it was 5/5.30 it was really hard to get her back to sleep.

Interesting – I will definitely keep this in mind for the next round of EWs.  We have been at 6am + for a few days now so I guess I can’t complain about that?  I read somewhere that anytime from 6 is acceptable for a baby to wake – is that right?  She doesn’t usually make a noise til 7ish and then I give her a bottle and we get up for the day between 730 and 8 which is lovely.

It depends what time bedtime is - anything over a 10.5hr night is generally acceptable (although some do need a longer night to be happy, and for some 10.5hrs can indicate OT) so if bedtime is 7pm then 6am is fine.

For us 10.5h is always OT - generally we need at least an 11h night for her to be rested

For the past few weeks, she has taken an age to go to sleep.  Nothing else has changed with her routine and she used to be asleep within 10 or max 15 mins of going to bed.  These days she flips around in her cot and talks and even whinges on occasion for up to an hour!  But still wakes up at the same time.  So even though she goes to bed at 7, lately her sleep has been 745 or 8pm - 630am max.  So she is bordering on the 10.5 minimum.  Maybe I should even try an earlier bed time?

Hi Ladies,

We are in need of some help.  DS (who is 10 mo) has been EW for the past 4 nights in a row.  He had been sleeping 7/7:30pm - 7:30am and it was awesome.  Now he's been EW at 5:30am and neither of us is happy about it.  The only way I can get him settled at that point is to feed him, so now I'm afraid I'm creating a bad habit.  I've read the 10 mo old sleep gone wonky post, and I wonder if that is what we're dealing with.  He might also be teething.  Here was yesterday (just the sleep parts of our day):

BT 7:00 pm
NW 12:30am (feed)
EW 6:30 (got up for the day)
Nap #1 10 am - 12:20 pm (I let him sleep a long time b/c of the rough night)
Nap #2 3:30pm - 4:05
BT 7:00pm
EW 5:30 am (still working on resettling)

He typically takes a longer morning nap (although over two hours is very unusual) and a shorter afternoon nap.  I don't know what to do.  Should I keep feeding him when he wakes in the night/early morning?  It's the only way he'll go back to sleep.  I try to feed him a lot during the day - I increased his bottles yesterday and he ate a lot of solids too - but that doesn't seem to be helping.  Do I need to start capping naps?  Later BT?  Please let me know what you think.

lilasmum - what's your routine at the moment?  Sounds like UT behaviour to me.....

SukieCat - have you tried dream meds to see if that gets him past 5.30am?  I wouldn't think OT or particularly UT from your routine really.  Feeding at that time can quite easily become a habit but to be honest I did the same when we were going through phases of EW and it didn't cause us any major problems.  Was the day you posted typical or would his pm nap normally be longer or shorter?

Hey Kathrine - I'd never heard of dream medicating until I read back in this topic a little ways.  I'm not sure how that would go... it seems like it'd be tough to get meds in him without waking him up, and once he's awake he gets mad.  I think I'll give it a few more days (teething pain can't last forever, right??), but if he's still EW then I might try the dream meds.  He's gone through phases before where he'll EW for a few days in a row and then get back on track (on his own).  It seems like as soon as I get worried and post on the forums, that's when he figures out how to STTN again.

The day I posted was a bit unusual.  Morning nap is usually 1.5 hr and afternoon nap is usually closer to 1 hr.  But if he sleeps longer in the morning, then he doesn't sleep as much in the afternoon.

This morning after his EW at 5:30am, he went back to sleep around 6:15 (after a bottle).  Then he slept until 8:15.  So now it's after 11 and I'm just about to put him down for a nap.

Another day, another 5:30am EW.  I tried giving him warm water instead of formula this morning.  He hasn't gone back to sleep yet so I'm not sure it's going to work...

Here's yesterday's sleep pattern:

BT 7pm
EW 5:30am - bottle
S 6:15 - 8:15am
Nap #1 11:15am - 1pm
Nap #2 4pm - 5pm
BT 7:30pm
EW 5:30am

Is his second nap too late?  Should I cap it at a certain time?   Maybe he's not getting enough A time before bed?  Or should I cap his first nap so that he has time to go down for his second before it gets too late?  He woke happy at every waking except 5:30am and he seemed tired by bedtime.  Thoughts?

Hey ladies. My 10.5 month old daughter seems to be in the 2-1 so just thought I would say hi. We are getting those yucky ew too and pm nap refusals.  We were on set naps for 1.5 months and last week things went sideways. Not enjoying all this guess work again.

It's so tempting to do just 1 nap cold turkey.
