2y 9mth old skipping naps at daycare
« on: December 18, 2012, 21:20:50 pm »
Hi  :)
My spirited son's been having 1-3 NW's every night for the last 5-6 months. Going through IUI treatments I haven't had a lot of energy and have gradually slipped into lots of accidental parenting issues :-[ Now my son needs me to hold his hand to go to sleep and when he has a NW he wants a glass of water. While drinking this his blanket needs to be in a certain position and afterwards he wants me to shake his pillow... Endless... Also he only wants me and shouts 'go away' whenever his dad tries to help. Of course I know only I am to blame ::) So tonight I've started doing something about it. I put a bottle of water in his bed and told him that now he could get a sip of water without waking up mum and dad. Big drama  :'( I also set a timer at 2 minutes and told him that when it rang I would let go of his hand and leave his room. Big drama  :'( Went back in and set the timer again and so forth. And eventually he fell asleep and knowing from earlier how this can affect his sleep I'm not looking forward to this night.
Anyway that was a bit of background information. Here's what I'm really concerned about right now

My son started skipping his naps two months ago just once in a while. But the last three weeks he has skipped napping entirely when he's at daycare. When he gets home it's too late for a nap as it will make his BT too late and NW will get even worse. We're having a hard time figuring out when his BT should be now that he's hardly napping anymore. He gets up at 7 am and we try to get him to bed at 7 pm but often he doesn't sleep before 7.30-8pm and I'm pretty sure it's because he is very very OT. So would it be a good idea to put him to bed at 6 pm maybe? What do you think  ???

Hi there,
For the naps I would try and have him asleep for 6/6.30pm if he is up at 7am. I used to work on a max of 11.5 hours awake when we first transitioned but 11 would probably be even better. DS can handle 12 hours now but he is 4 and it has taken a while to adjust. I would imagine it is def OT that is meaning he does not fall asleep quickly.

Hi Becky
Thankyou so much.
We will definitely go for the 6 pm and adjust all our rituals to fit into the new timeframe. Tonight we went for a 7pm BT and it went fairly easy but I'm sure he could have slept much earlier as he was yawning and rubbing his eyes when he got home from daycare at 3pm. So tomorrow we will go for 6.45pm; saturday 6.30pm and so forth till we get to Christmas eve which will definitely spoil everything ;D Here in Denmark 24th of December is when we open our presents and eat lots of great food and my son will be playing with his cousins till he drops. But by then we should know a lot more about his new sleeping habits and will be able to fix things quickly ;)

Thanks again. I will let you know how it goes.

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones
