« on: December 19, 2012, 15:31:20 pm »
Hi..

Wondering if someone can help..

My little boy has never been an enthusiastic eater but a couple of weeks ago he got a lot better drinking 4-5oz at a time but now is only drinking 3oz but is still hungry after 30mins..

I know i cant get him to drink more than he wants but has anyone had a problem like this..do u think it could be teats that need changing? Some help and support would be appreciated!

How often are you feeding him at the moment? Yes a faster teat could help - it's worth a try!

I think we jumped up a nipple speed around 3 months and again at 7 months... could well be the issue :)  Remember to give him a couple of days to adjust to the faster flow ;)

How many feeds is he having over night? What's his behaviour like when he feeds - does he feed calmly or does he fight the bottle and twist and arch?

He may need to go to a 4 hour feeding routine, it's very common around the 3 month mark with formula fed babies. He won't be able to do 2 hours A time for a 4 hour EASY so you will have to do osmething like EASAES for a few weeks until his A times catch up, it does work but watch you don't feed to sleep when the E comes right before S!

He usually has one feed around 2 then another at 5..give or take half hour or an hour..

He has just woke up now after 5 houes but still only taken 3oz...

He doesn arch his back but sometimes he does just push the bottle out with his tongue and shake his head side to side or cry. I mentioned relux to the doctor a while back but he is very reluctant to give meds and said that it will go away itself? Although he doesnt spit up that much..but has been doing more than before..

Thanks for the advis everyone!

Most babies outgrow around a year of age but in the meantime, it's quite painful and can cause erosion to the esophagus... I would push for a meds trial if you think reflux is a possibility.

Im from the uk but havent heard of them giving anything other than infant gaviscon.. i was thinkin of trying a staydown formula.. im not sure if its worth a try..i do suspect that it is reflux as he pushes his bottle out of his mouth with great force and seems like he is in pain..

Im not sure which route to take as my health visitor said he may also have a allergy to milk as he is getting slight eczema.. could this also be an issue? Im a first time mum so i dont have a clue but he seems to be more and more unsettled.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely a possibility hun... in fact, reflux is often caused by a milk allergy... quick way to see if this is the issue, try a hypoallergenic formula for a few weeks :)

I'm in the UK with 2 refluxers! Most GPs will only prescribe gaviscon but you can ask for a referral to a paediatrician who can and will prescribe other meds, ranitidine (zantac) is usually the first med. Reflux milks are available on prescription too - Enfamil AR is what you need to ask for, my Dr wouldn't prescribe it without the paed say so but many will. Some Drs will rescribe ranitidine too so it's worth asking.

Have you noticed any other symptoms of milk protien intolerance (if it was an allergy rather than an intolerance I think you would know about it by now, food intolerances and allergys are very different!) like mucous in his stools or green loose stools? If not, I would try the reflux milk first for a few weeks and if no improvement you may need to try a specialist milk.

Hi thanks for the quick reply :) my dr has just prescribed the specialist milk for milk allergy on the say so of the hv..

My hv suspected milk allergy when my son had an eczema like flare up out of nowhere..and is also quite congested but its not a cold..he is also wheezy and has colic like symptoms.. i have looked it up and these are all symptoms of milk allergy..he does have slight mucous in his bowel movements..

Dr has prescribed 4 tins of milk and if it doesnt make a difference i will definately go back and as for reflux meds.. the only thing is he doesnt spit up that much and how is it possible to diagnose silent reflux?? As he drinks his full feed at night time..surely it would affect him then too. He also doest have trouble lying down in his cot..??

Im really searching for some kind of solution but i guess its also trial and error.. i just hate to think my lo is in pain and i dont jnow what it is!  :(

Just thought that it might just be gas and he is taking in too much air when drinking. Maybe thats why he can drink so much at night because he is half asleep n not taking in air?? All these possibilities ???

For sure that can be part of it hun...

Silent reflux is generally diagnosed by doing a meds trial ;)  Even though it is "silent" you can often hear a wet hiccup and hoarseness when breathing.

Hmmm..

Confused  ???

He has hoarseness anyway as he has  a floppy larynx..

And as of wet hiccups sometimes he does sometimes he doesnt ..

I think its generally hard to diagnose without meds..and some people say that some meds dont even work :-s

This sure is frustrating  >:(

There are some actual tests to check for reflux (and silent) - a barium swallow is the most common...

Meds will work, you just have to find the right one ;)

That said, I would give the new formula a chance - could well be a milk allergy and that should clear in a couple of weeks...  Just wondering though, could the floppy larynx be part of the issue?
